Mark Chatt

Mark Chatt

Monday, May 29th, 2023

Mark Warren Chatt passed away at home on May 29, 2023, surrounded by family.  He was born to Orville and Patricia Chatt on March 12, 1955, in Eugene, Oregon.  His family moved to Iowa in 1956 and then to the Skagit Valley in 1964.  Mark attended elementary school in both Ames, Iowa, and Burlington, Washington, then middle and high school in Sedro-Woolley, graduating in 1973.

Mark went on to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Florida, Georgia, Alabama Mission and attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, earning a BA in Education.  He later earned his Masters in Education from Leslie College in Boston, Massachusetts and his Principal Certificate at Western Washington College.  He co-started at least two antique shops, Corner House Antiques and Moonlighting Antiques, as well as worked with many other local antique dealers in the area.  For many years, he also hosted estate sales, most recently known as the Orange Shirts Estate Sale Services.  Mark taught school in the Sedro-Woolley School District for 33 years, the majority of which was spent teaching fourth grade at Clear Lake Elementary.  Besides church service, teaching school, hunting for antiques, and doing estate sales for others, he enjoyed raising his children, spending time with family, and sharing his enthusiasm for heritage and history with others.  In his younger years, Mark’s interests included anything mechanical.  He loved to take things apart and put them back together again.  This led to exploring an interest in mechanical engineering and an architectural career.  This is how he gained his love of building and creating things like homes and other structures.  He could always find the beauty in the broken no matter if it were glass, furniture, people or houses.  His stained-glass creations can be found far and wide, and there are at least eight houses in Sedro-Woolley, plus the Third Street Station, that are still thriving thanks to his love for old things.  As a Bishop of the Sedro-Woolley Ward and Young Single Adults Ward in Anacortes, for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he grew a renewed love and appreciation of people for who, what and where they were.  He loved everyone.

Mark is survived by his wife of 41 years, Susie Chatt; daughter, Jennifer (Justin) Ford; son, Michael (Megan) Chatt; grandchildren, Madelyn, John, Cameron, Kincaid and Alayna; siblings, Beth (Tim) McGurran, Julie Erickson, Scott (Cheryl) Chatt, David (Steffen) Chatt; In-laws, Mike and Paula Clark, Ray and Janis Fox, Shirley and Steve Williams, Mary Fox; aunt, Adrian Horner, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jay Chatt, as well as numerous aunts and uncles.

Our family would like to thank Hospice and Eden Health Care employees and all the family members and friends for their loving assistance and support through Mark’s illness.  A Funeral Service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1122 McGarigle, Sedro-Woolley, Washington 98284, on Friday, June 2, 2023, at 11:00 O’clock.  Share your memories of Mark and sign the online guest register.

  • John-Michael Clark

A man of many talents, he always impressed me with his instructive and patient manner when creating stained glass, even moving pianos, which he was strong enough to move himself, he was humble enough to ask for help though. Always a strong male influence and great example of how to carry myself in the world, aside from my dad, Mike, and Jason my oldest brother. Mark will always be an influence in my life as how to act as a husband and how to shoulder responsibility. A stand up guy. Go in loving peace into God’s grace, Uncle.

I was so sad to here of Mark’s passing. I was among the antiquer’s who spent many hours talking about the wonderful world of antiques. We did many estate sales at our home just a few blocks from Mark’s on ferry street. still sleep in the wonderful beds we bought from Mark, It was such a blessing when Mark and his dad came down during these sales. I had lost touch with Mark these last years when Brian passed away and I moved. I think of Susie and know how difficult it is for her. We learn to live with our loss but It doesn’t make it some easier knowing there are people who can help you and we will remember Marks smile and send our thoughts to his family

I graduated in 1973 with Mark. As a young man he was always kind to everyone he knew and would offer a willing hand up. He had a great sense of humor and it was an honor to know him. My sincere condolences to the family

Mr Chat was such a wonderful teacher. As a youngster in elementary school, there are so many things you forget ! I will never forget making stain glassed windows in Mr Chat’s class . Or the many rounds of “around the world” multiplication! If we made it around – then Mr Chat had to play – and boy did he beat us every time (in record time haha). My thoughts and prayers are with Mark’s family. I hope you find peace in your memories with him.

Mark was a wonderful school teacher and showed so much patience and understanding to his students. His family heritage project was very special to my daughter, researching and documenting our family tree. Two of my grandchildren were also extremely fortunate to have him as their 4th grade teacher.
I had the privilege of working with Mark at Clear Lake Elementary and I always enjoyed our visits about antiques, collectibles, old houses and future retirement.
Mark had a heart of Gold, I feel honored to have known him. Rest in Peace my friend, until we meet again.

Mark was a classmate and he and Susie our neighbors. He was a wonderful guy and will be missed by us as neighbors and by the SWHS Class of 1973. There will definitely be a void at our 50th reunion in July.

Prayers of comfort and peace to Susie and family.

Sending prayers for all of you as you grieve the loss of Mark. I have so many memories of the time he helped us downsize and figure out what all the antiques were used for. Thinking of you Suzie as you go through the motions and emotions during the next few weeks. Sending you big hugs. I hope you have peace in your heart as we all know how you cared for Mark and loved him so much.
