Mark David Selvog, 52, a former Kodiak, Alaska resident, passed away December 26, 2002 at home in Sedro Woolley, with his family by his side after a courageous battle with Alpha One Antitrypsin Deficiency.
Mark was born in Anacortes WA. on April 19, 1950, the son of Samuel and Agnes Mossestad Selvog. He moved to Alaska with his family at an early age, they moved to Palmer, Anchorage, Wasilla and Seldovia before settling on Kodiak Island in 1962.
Marks father, was a commercial fisherman and a pioneer of the King Crab industry in Alaska: his mother, was a registered nurse and a ‘Top Notch Mom’.
Mark rode out the ’64’ Alaskan Earthquake and Tidal wave which hit Kodiak Island. He graduated from Kodiak High School in 1969 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He spent his tour of duty "stateside". His permanent station was at the Naval Air Station, LeMoore, CA; as an Aircraft mechanic/refueler.
Mark returned to Kodiak in 1973 to resume his career in commercial fishing. He ‘skippered’ and crewed on various boats, including the F/V Minnie B with his Dad, and brother Craig, and salmon fishing with his own boat the F/V Sundance.
In 1990 Mark was hired by the State of Alaska Department of Public Safety as a Boat Engineer on the P/V TROOPER. He gained a strong mutual respect and lasting friendships with his co-workers. He retired, due to ill health, in 1998.
Mark and his future wife Lori stumbled into each other in Kodiak in 1982 and were married in Mt. Vernon, WA on October 14, 1989. He became the proud father of daughter, Lindsey, in 1991. After retiring the family relocated to Sedro-Woolley.
Mark will be remembered for his love and loyalty for his friends and family, his quiet quick wit, his love and knowledge of nature and the outdoors, his talent for detail ranging from mechanics to fly-fishing, his wonderful sense of humor, practical jokes and laughing with gusto.
From younger brother Craig, "Mark was and always will be a role model for me.. he would always try to ‘set me straight’ with sound advice exemplified by example." From big sister, Sheila: "It’s impossible to box feelings into words for the love I will always have for my little brother. He kept me laughing from the time he was a tot, he always demonstrated concern and help when he knew I was troubled. He was a terrific brother as well as a wonderful friend and confidante. I know he will always be with us."
Mark is survived by his wife, Lori Siebe, and daughter Lindsey, of Sedro Woolley, his sister Sheila Verrall and brother in-law, Larry of Burlington, his brother Craig and wife Rose of Sedro Woolley, Niece Erin Hansen, and Nephews Jared Verrall, Gary Gormley and Christopher Selvog. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of Mark’s life, will be held at the Glenhaven Community Center, at 2997 Glenhaven Dr. on Saturday January 4, 2003 at 2:00.
Mark’s ashes will be scattered on Kodiak Island this coming summer as he requested; a memorial will be held in Kodiak; the date to be announced.
