Melvin August ‘Mel’ Horn, 70, a resident of the Birsdview community, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Life Care Center of Skagit Valley in Sedro-Woolley.

Mel was born on March 12, 1939 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the son of Blair & Martha Stewart Weaver. Mel was first raised in Hopewell, Virginia and then in several other communities as his step-father was career military. He returned to graduate from Hopewell High School with the class of 1957. Mel then attended and graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting in 1961.

Mel worked for Lane Wells in Houston as an accountant for two years until enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1963 where he served his country until 1966.
He was united in marriage to Patricia McNutt in Houston on February 2, 1963 and she made her home in Northern Virginia until Mel’s discharge in 1966, after which they lived in Virginia where Mel worked as an accountant for Dyna Lectron until being transferred to Pueblo, Colorado in 1976. In 1980 Mel began working for the Boeing Company as an accountant. He was later transferred to work in Apple Valley, California in 1982 and then to Kent, Washington in 1988. He retired in 2005 after 25 years with Boeing.

After his retirement, he and Pat moved to Birdsview where he enjoyed woodworking in his garage, mowing the grass on his John Deere mower and cutting brush with his brush hog. He and Pat also enjoyed going camping.

Mel is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia, at the family home in Birdsview. His daughter, Julie Thomas, and his two grandsons, Jeff & Joel Thomas, all of Sterling Heights, Michigan. A half-sister, Sylvia Harris of Forest Hills, Maryland and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Blair Weaver and his mother & step-father, Martha & Charles Horn.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the North Puget Cancer Care Center, 2000 Hospital Dr., Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284.

A Life Celebration will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at the St. James Episcopal Church in Sedro-Woolley with Pastor Vicki Wesen officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
