Mr. Montgomery inspired so many with genuine enthusiasm and compassion. The mention of 50 push-ups or more for whomever finished last was a great motivator for anyone to stay on task. It taught me to do my best always and believe where there is a will there is a way. It’s the push to do our best because he believed in us. His genuine love for each of us made him the best teacher and wonderful role model. It’s nice to read so many wonderful memories and how he influenced each of us. RIP Mr. Montgomery

Monty was a great impression for me when I was in Woodway. My father also did his taxes which was something that put me in a small envelope of knowing him a bit closer than most. Remembering how he pushed me allowed me to lose major weight in the last few years. I remember him well and miss him dearly.

Mr. Montgomery made a big, positive impression in my life. He was my PE teacher, Coach and Friend for 6 years. 32 years later, I can still hear his voice yelling “HOLMES!!” when I failed to pay attention or got caught goofing off! lol Just a short decade ago, I found out from my in-laws that the group they occasionally hung out with, included the Montgomeries… I had looked forward to seeing Monty again, but sadly, that never happened.

Mr. Montgomery might be gone, but he’ll never be forgotten. RIP Monty.

  • Jason H. Self

Mr. Montgomery was a wonderful teacher…I was in his body mechanics class and he helped alot of us guys believe in ourselves and to push harder than ever when it came to being physicly fit…you were very kind and enjoyed all of your students and we all loved that about you thanks for all the good years of structure and building our self esteem. God bless….Jason H. Self…Sedro Woolley High school student class of 1994.

    Robyn and Family,
We want you to know how we remember Monty, your husband and father and grandfather!
One time in Bible Study group Monty said with confiction: The most important things in life are God and people. We have not forgotten his statement.
We remember Monty as passionately, pratically sharing Jesus within his daily encounters.
May you, each one, be comforted by the Godly heritage and example you have in Monty.
    Love in Christ,
    Jamie and Ralph Wittmeyer

Mr Montgomery was my weight training teacher for three years. I cant believe he is gone. He was a huge inspiration to me, and one of the kindest people I have ever met, He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

  • Judy Shaw Skaufel

I went to Emonds High School with Monty and Robyn. I remember Monty’s sweet shy smile. He was friendly to everyone at school. Robyn words can not express well enough how I feel. May God give you and your family peace and comfort. Mom sold her cabin years ago at Lk Murray and wondered if you were still at Big Lake.
    Hugs
    Judy

Monty got us all working out when we were in High School. He gave us the fundamentals that still hold true today. Lifelong good health — I can’t think of a better gift from a dedicated teacher and a great man.

I played football with Monte at Everett CC. He was not only a great player, but a great guy. I am pleased that he did so well in his life. I noticed Al Anderson’s rememberance, and I wondered if that is the same Al Anderson who was there with us at ECC?

It is difficult to loose a loved one, but they go to a better place. My prayers are with you and you family.

RIP Coach, you were a great coach, teacher and motivator. woodway class of 82

  • Bob (Diane) Bernhoft

Monty you were a class act. I thought for sure you would make your time on Earth longer than I. Keep a spot for Johnny and I near the streets of Gold.
Remember our journey on the “Amazing Grace”.
God be with Robyn and the family. May our tremendous loss be Heaven’s Gain.

  • Michele (Boning) Amy

I had Mr. Montgomery for weightlifting class at Woodway High School. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this big, weight-lifting, football coaching guy. He was sooooo nice and sweet. I loved him as a teacher!

  • Robert & Kathy Reim

It was a pleasure to work with Monte at Sedro-Woolley High School and to enjoy the addition of his family to the area and as our students. My family sends our sincere sympathy to all of you. His heart was evident in everything he did and the sparkle in his eye made it fun to be his colleague. Blessings and best wishes…

  • Ken and Nancy Benson

    Robyn and family,

Our entire family has been blessed by knowing Monty and all of you, first as parents of kids at Meadowdale and followed by being neighbors at Big Lake. Heaven becomes even more precious knowing Monty is with his Lord.
We wish we could celebrate his life with you on Friday, but we are hopeful Jill will be able to be there. Hugs and prayers,
    Ken, Nancy and family

  • Al Anderson

Monty was a great roommate and the kind of guy that I wanted on my side of the football field.

He will be missed. So sorry to hear of his passing.

  • Jim Simpson

I was really sad to hear the news about Coach Montgomery. I got to know him over the course of 3 years in high school where he taught us in the weight room, but to me, more importantly, he was my Linebacker coach in Sedro-Woolley and my favorite coach.

I really wish I could have seen him one more time, but will always have great memories of the man.

Even after me and my brother were done with High School, and my sister was still there, my mom always made it a point to go by Coach Montgomery’s table at teacher parent conferences and wait in line just to say hi, because her two boys always thought fondly of him. A warm person, a tough coach, and a good man.

My condolences to his family and friends.

  • Janet Yocom Hollingsworthq

Mr. Montgomery was my PE teacher at Woodway High School. PE was never my favorite class, but Monty always encouraged me and my friends to do our best, even when our best was not that great. Thanks for the lessons Monty! Till we meet again…

  • Rodger (Greif) Griffin

Monty was my PE teacher at Woodway HS. In 1979, during my sophomore year, he suggested I join the track team. He recognized a potential in me that I’m not sure I would have on my own. Not only did I join Track that year, I also ran Cross Country and Track my junior & senior years…ran the Seattle Marathon in 1981….and with an athletic scholarship ran for Everett Community College. Motivation sometimes begins with a few simple words from someone who cares. And Monty cared and must have inspired many, many people.

  • Steve Thompson

I can honestly say that no other coach or teacher had more of an influence on me even after 30+ years and made me the man I am today than Mr. Montgomery.

  • Gail (Tucker-Day) Blaske

I was shocked to see Monty’s picture and name in the paper. The class of 1963 Edmonds High School will always remember his smiling face.
Robyn, there are so few words to say to you and your family at a time like this…..I’m so sorry.

  • Patrick Day

Monty and I were raised in the Edmonds area in the 1960’s and graduated (with Robyn) in the same class in 1963 from Edmonds High. Monty and I played football together through Junior High and High School. Edmonds in those days played a single wing offense and played in the Seattle Metro League in High School. Monty played right guard and I played inside tackle which made us decide on each play who and how to block and who to take out, often together. That made us a lot closer than most people would guess.

He was a great person with a great sense of humor, and he was a great football player. That is the Monty that I remember. I was looking forward to seeing Monty at our fifty year high school reunion this summer. And even though we have not been close since High School, I will miss him, it seems like it was yesterday. I want Robyn and family to know that I have admired Monty all my life, and always will. I wish you all the best in this period of grief over his passing, sharing with you the knowledge that Monty has been called to a better place.

Monty was a super outstanding guy, and was always willing to listen and help me during school. His ears where there to listen and his hands where there to help even after graduation in 2003 he was there smiling. He will be greatly missed and my thoughts and prayers are with the family u are lucky to have a great man in your life

Monty meant so much to me and our family. He taught and coached with my dad at Woodway HS. I babysat his oldest two children Kris and Beau. Our families spent summers next door to each other on Big Lake. My brother, Mark, my cousins Scott and Brad, Kris, Bo, Ben and Josh Montgomery and I, as well and Monty’s neice and nephew, Erik and Ginny spent our summers swimming, waterskiing and watching the 3rd of July fireworks together. Josh Montgomery was the ringbearer in my wedding. The second generations of kids included my kids, my brother’s kids, Scott and Brad’s kids, the Hudson’s kids and all the Mongtomery grandkids have grown up together spending summers at Big Lake doing what we did as children. The third generation of the Big Lake gang is soon approaching but it will never be the same without Monty. Monty was the Big Lake gang leader! He’d organize the 4th of July games, whether it be a volleyball tournament or a softball game for the teenager generation or the balloon toss for the younger generation. He was a man of faith and lived his life to glorify God. Even though he was the tough guy PE teacher and football coach, he had the biggest, softest heart ever. There’s a hole in my heart with the absence of Monty but what he left behind is two generations of wonderful people who will carry on in his memory. The Montgomery family has gone through more than their share of tragedy in 2012. I pray God will bring them all peace in the coming new year! I’m so sorry we will miss Monty’s memorial service. Even though we will miss his service, our hearts will be there! God bless Robyn and all of the Montgomery extended family!!!

Monty was one class individual. I had the pleasure of coaching with Monty for many years at Sedro Woolley High School. A great coach and a great physical educator. I was the better for my time with Monty. Special man

  • Lorri Galbreath

I remember a fun PE teacher and a great bible study friend. We used to meet at Monty and Robyn’s home to share the word. As a Woodway class of 1982 graduate, the school was richer for having him there. He used to take our bible study group on hikes and other adventures that are great memories.

Monty Montgomery was my P.E. teacher when I was a Sophomore at Woodway High School. His physical presence was pretty imposing — he was very muscular and very fit. He could be intimidating but he also had a quiet, calm, and patient demeanor. He took an interest in ALL of his students, star athletes or not. I only played a few intramural sports at WHS so never had him as a coach. I was a very thin, NOT-too-imposing kid. I remember when I injured my knee skiing and couldn’t participate in regular P.E. class activities for three months or more he didn’t “let me off the hook” — he had me spend my time in the weight room, re-habbing my knee and trying to build up the rest of my skinny frame. The discipline did me good — I appreciated that he cared and pushed us to do our best.

  • Janine Cook

Each time I close my eyes I see Monty’s bright, warm smile. His sincere kindess and love of his friends and family was so rich and significant in his life, his absence will be a heartfelt loss to us all. He cared about everyone and was always the first to offer help and guidance, for which I am very appreciative of. He will always have a special place in my heart as does his entire family!

“… Im glad we have our memories,
our lives recorded in our soul.
for when it seems we’re all alone,
    our memories take us home.”

  • Linda Basel Moore

As a student, I appreciated Mr. Montgomery’s genuine interest in his students. Teaching wasn’t just a “job” to him; it was a calling and we knew it. He had a ready smile and an encouraging word for all who crossed his path.

Thank you Mr. Montgomery for encouraging your students to “be all they could be.” You set a standard that most teachers only aspire to.

    Until we meet again,

    Linda Basel Moore

I was only able to share the 3 years of my life in high school with Monte.
A shame, because Monte was the type of person one could instantly and easily become friends with.
One you would want as your next door neighbor.

He was an inspiration to me and set a great example for both the field of battle and life life in general.

    He personified gentle strength.
