Myrtle Mae Brookings Greenough, age 92, went home to be with her Lord & Savior on Friday, August 18, 2006 at the Life Care Center of Skagit Valley in Sedro-Woolley, WA.
She was born June 1, 1914 in Merriman, Nebraska, one of eight children of Walter and Clara Peters Brookings.
She was raised in Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota.
Myrtle was united in marriage to Hugh D. Greenough on September 3, 1929 in Martin, South Dakota. They moved to Sedro-Woolley in 1940, later moving to Moses Lake, WA in 1947. She and her family returned to Sedro-Woolley in 1952. Myrtle & Hugh were married for seventy one years and had six children.
Myrtle had many hobbies and talents. She loved cooking, baking, canning, and sewing. She had a passion for creating crafts, selling them and sharing her skills with others. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed many items for people at Country Meadows. Myrtle made a cold medicine M&H which she sold to local drug stores for many years. She was a devout Christian and attended Bethel Assembly of God for 30 years, later attending services at the Free Methodist Church of Sedro Woolley. While residing at Country Meadows she attended services there. In 1989, Myrtle wrote a book about her life titled, ‘A Girl from Nebraska’. She also was an excellent barber and barbered for many friends and family through the years.
Myrtle was a loving mother and enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had many good friends and her cheerful smile will be missed by all.
She is survived by 2 sons, Darley Greenough of Mount Vernon and Gene Greenough and his wife, Dorothy of Lynden. 3 daughters, Gail Whitney and her husband, Clell of Port Townsend, Joyce Grimm and her husband, Roy of Maple Valley, and Lyla Cooper and her husband, Glen of Roy, UT. 1 brother, Everett Brookings of Conrad, MT and 1 sister, Doris Kester of Sedro-Woolley. 21 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a very special friend and devoted companion, Roy Ramey, whom she met at the Country Meadows retirement home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh in 1990; a daughter, June Rucker in 1986; 3 brothers, Gene, George & Charles Brookings and 2 sisters, Laura Greenough and Luella Holmes.
Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at 3:00PM at the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Sedro-Woolley.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society. Cremation arrangements and services are under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
