Saturday, August 21st, 2010

Onalee June “Connie” Jansen, age 85, passed away peacefully on Sat., August 21, 2010 at Sunrise Assisted Living  in Edmonds, WA. Born Sept 28, 1924 to Bertha and Howard Conklin of Corunna, MI.

She grew up on a dairy farm, graduated from nearby Flushing HS and later Michigan State University with a BA in Home Economics/Nutrition. She then worked as a Dietician at the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) where she met her husband of 62 years, Charles L. Jansen.

She raised a family of six children, was involved in Boy and Girl Scouts, earned a Masters in Education (Biology/Geology) from Northern Illinois University, and taught at Marian Central Catholic HS in Woodstock, IL. She moved with her family to the Bellevue, Washington area in 1969 and taught science for 13 years at Lake Washington HS in Kirkland until her retirement.  In her retirement she helped her husband to establish and run Backpacking Equipment, Inc. in Issaquah as well as to build their own home overlooking Fisherman’s Bay on Lopez Island in the San Juans. They subsequently moved to Anacortes and finally to Sedro-Woolley where she was closer to her children and a member of the Ladies Guild at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. After a spinal injury/accident in 2007 she resided at Where the Heart Is Assisted Living facility in Burlington, WA.

Throughout her life she enjoyed camping and backpacking, gardening, cooking/canning , home remodeling, and sewing/embroidery. She particularly enjoyed travel (especially summer trips to Michigan, ferry trips to Sidney, BC and winter vacations in Hawaii). She especially relished family gatherings, reunions, and social times with friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents , and her sister Donna of Bradenton, FL. She is survived by her sister Joyce McConkey of Midland, MI ;  her brother Bruce Conklin of Corunna, MI ; and in WA state her husband Charles L. Jansen of Sedro-Woolley, and her children (Charles M. Jansen [ Mary Wirta-Jansen] of Redmond ; Dr. Thomas Jansen [Sharon Lewis-Jansen] of Edmonds ; Richard Jansen [Joanie Thompson-Jansen] of Seattle ; Patricia Jansen-Key [Art Key]  of Richland ; Shari Jansen of Kirkland ; and Jeannie  Jansen of Federal Way). She had eleven grandchildren (Nathan, Alex, Anna, Sarah, Katie, Carly, Ryan, Rhett, Alisha, Brianna, and Caitlin). And she had four great-grandchildren (Presley, Mason, Baylor, and Beckett).

Connie instilled her love of the outdoors, the importance of a good education, and a sense of self-sufficiency (her “Golden Hammer Award”) as her legacy to all those her life touched. She was known for her sensitivity, her willingness to listen to others, and her quiet graciousness. She is loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

My Mother’s life was celebrated on Saturday, August 28th. A brilliant sun filled day. As she would want. She was a beautiful, warm and gracious woman. She defined strength. There wasnt a person who didnt Love Mom! Memories were shared of her love of her family farm in Michigan, her brothers & sisters, Joyce, Donna & Bruce and all the Conklin family. The family gave a memorable eulogy with many great stories of Mom. She loved cooking, teaching, the outdoors, her lovely friends and the many places she traveled…..mostly she loved us, her children and the grand and great grandchildren she was blessed with.
Mom passed on my daughter’s wedding day….she had the best seat watching from heaven!

We love you Mom…forever & always!
    Your daughter,
    Shari

My thoughts and prayers go out to Connie’s family. I was an Assistant Principal at Lake Washington High School 1982-87 and so enjoyed Connie as a kind and capable teacher and a wonderful and loving human being. I remember how proud she was of her family and her warm and generous spirit! I will never forget her beautiful smile and calm and dignified manner. She will be missed. I am proud to have known her. Dear Jensen Family,
I was very fortunate to have known Connie even though it was only a
short time. We both attended meetings of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Ladies Guild and we always managed to sit next to each other and talk
about ourselves. She was genuinely interested in me and my background.
You know some people for many years and never really connect, but
Connie and I connected right away. I will never forget her kindness and
her way of making you feel very special. God has one very special angel
    when he received Connie…..

  • Mr. & Mrs. Robert L. and Marcia Foster

    Dear Mr. Jansen and family,
Although I did not personally know Mrs. Onalee Jansen, the article in the Skagit Valley Herald (a few months ago re: she and her husband going to California) touched my heart and brought me to tears. That Mr. Jansen loved his beautiful wife and could not bear to be apart from her, spoke volumes of their relationship. And now I am saddened once again for the loss that Mr. Jansen and his family will have to endure. My prayers are for Mr. Jansen; may he continue to be surrounded by loving and supportive family and friends. God Bless you kind sir. And God Bless those who loved Onalee and to those whom she loved.
    Sincerely and Respectfully submitted,
    Mrs. Marcia Foster

I was so saddened to read of connies passing today. The last time I saw her was in fred meyers after she had come back to their home after leaving for a short time. I remember when she and chuck first moved into sedro woolley and I worked at one of our local coffee shops and they would come in and have coffee and share a sandwich and just sit and talk. They loved each other very much and it was effident in how they treated each other. I only wish I wouldve gone to see her after she moved to a different place down south. She was one of the nicest, kindest ,sweetest ladies I have ever known and I was happy to know her. My heart goes out to you chuck as well as her family. She will be missed.

  • The Jolitz Family

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Jansen family at this time. Connie was a sincere, thoughtful, intelligent, and beautiful woman. She was also
great cook: today she would be a star on Iron Chef!

She raised six marvelous children, Chuck, Tom, Dick, Patti, Sheri, and Jeannie , while working full time and loved all eleven grandchildren. She was a special person.

    Love to all of you,
Brian, Diane, Brad, Whitney and Brooke
