Roy L. Ramey

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Roy L. ‘R. L.’ Ramey passed away October 25, 2009 at the age of 94 while living at Mountain Glen Retirement Community in Mount Vernon.

R. L. was born June 3, 1915 in Franklin, North Carolina to Joseph Kettering and Mary Jane Hutchins Ramey. In 1935 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp and served for three years in North Carolina and Oregon.

He married Mary E. Ledford, also from Franklin, NC, in 1938. R. L., Mary and their two oldest children moved to Hamilton by train in May of 1943. R. L. was hired by Skagit Log, a small independent logging company at Loretta Creek, a few days after arriving. At that time trees were cut with a crosscut saw which required a man on each end and a lot of ‘elbow grease.’ R. L. remained in the logging industry until he retired from Scott Paper in 1975.

The Ramey family moved to the Potts Road in Day Creek in the fall of 1947 and lived on their small farm until the 1980’s. R. L. and Mary then moved to Glenwood Acres in Sedro-Woolley and lived there until Mary passed away in 2003. R. L. lived at Country Meadow Village in Sedro-Woolley for five years before moving to Mountain Glen.

He enjoyed life and made many friends during his lifetime. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. He raised a beautiful vegetable garden each year and it brought him great joy and satisfaction to give away what he produced. He was an avid collector of antiques and loved going to garage sales.
R. L. is survived by a son, Douglas; three daughters Vivian Kay, Deanna Ammons and Alma Ramey; a sister, Ruby Holland of Franklin, NC; a brother-in-law, William R. Ledford of Greensboro, NC and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary; his parents; sisters, Kitty, Evie and Nannie; an infant daughter Peggy; a son, Dexter and grandsons, Andrew and Scott Robertson.

At Mr. Ramey’s request, no funeral service will be held. A private service for the family is planned for a later date. In lieu of memorials, the family requests that you commit a random act of kindness in their father’s memory. Burial arrangements under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley, WA.
