Ruie Franks, 73, a longtime Sedro-Woolley resident, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at her home of 41 years.
She was born on September 20, 1939 in Jackson County, North Carolina, the daughter of Merritt & Eleanora Parker Melton.
She came to Skagit County with her family in 1943, settling in Birdsview where she attended grade school and graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School with the class of 1958. She then attended Skagit Valley College where she studied nutrition and became a certified dietician.
Ruie was a devoted wife and mother to her family. She loved through her strong Christian faith.
Ruie worked as a cook and dietician at Skagit Valley Convalescence center in Sedro-Woolley for many years.
In August of 1978 she married Earlie Franks in Clear Lake where they made their home in Sedro-Woolley. She enjoyed cooking for family gatherings and tending to her flower garden.
Ruie and Earlie served as foster parents to over 50 children in the valley over the years.
Ruie is survived by her husband of 34 years, Earlie at the family home; her children and their spouses, Merritt “Keith” & Marcie O’Bryan of Clear Lake, Kevin & Vicky O’Bryan of Sedro-Woolley, Mary O’Bryan of South Bristol, Maine, Rita O’Bryan of Sedro-Woolley, two step children, Ken & Mary Franks of Mount Vernon, Karen & Dave Christensen of Clear Lake, two adopted children, Naomi & Jason Barker of Sedro-Woolley and Leroy Franks of Marysville. Eleven grandchildren, Tegan, Ian, Kortney & Dustin O’Bryan, Joshua Hoyt, Jason Franks, Jennifer Misner, Christina Leber, Alisa Manley and Zoey & Jacob Barker and one great-grandson, Noah Franks; two brothers, Ray Melton (Babe) and Roger Melton, and three sisters, Mary Melton, Sharon Garcia (Bob) and Ronda Garcia (Mike), two god children, Jade and Skyler Anderson; numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews and the many foster children who have passed thru their doors. She is preceded by her parents Merritt & Elenora and son-in-law Donald Doran.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 1:00 PM at the Lyman Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Wagner from the Canyon Creek Church in Mount Vernon officiating. Interment will follow at the Lyman Cemetery. Visitation will be available at Lemley Chapel on Thursday & Friday from 9am to 5 pm and on Saturday from 9am to 11am. The family suggests memorials be made to MATA: Missionary Aviation Flight Training Academy 19002 59th Drive NE, Arlington, WA 98223.

    So bummed to hear of Ruies passing. I always looked forward to the spring when her and Earlie would come to the greenhouse, he would head to the fruit trees with her saying “Now Earlie you aren’t getting anymore fruit trees”, but he always ended up with at least one, to go with her many plants that she would buy that day. Ruie was just so sweet. I will miss her.
