Russell James Rawls

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Russell James Rawls, 70, a resident of Sedro-Woolley, passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at United General Hospital surrounded by his family and love.

He was born on July 26, 1940 in Tacoma, Washington, the son of Russell H. and Agatha M. (Harrington) Rawls.  The family moved to Skagit County where Russell attended and graduated from Immaculate Conception Grade School in 1954. He graduated from Burlington-Edison High School with the class of 1958.  Russell then attended Washington State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacutical Science in 1964.

After graduation Russell worked as a pharmacist in Ephrata, Washington for many years until returning to the Skagit Valley in the early 1980’s, working as a pharmacist in Anacortes, Burlington and Sedro-Woolley, retiring from Rite Aid in Sedro-Woolley in 2002.

On May 3, 2003 he was united in marriage to his beloved wife Jonna Zieber and together they have made their home in Sedro-Woolley.

Russell had an insatiable appetite for reading and learning. His love of learning was fueled by his numerous interests and keen curiosity over the years.  In his early years Russell enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing, and boating. He enjoyed building model airplanes, collecting trains, photography, weaving and traveling.  After his retirement Russell became a Master Gardner and was always eager to share his flowers and garden surplus.  Russell always had ample love and time for his friends and family many relied on his wisdom and vast knowledge.  Many faithful dogs were lucky to have Russell as their owner over the last 70 years.  Russell’s quiet even-tempered strength was only surpassed by his infectious laugh that was unmistakably “Russie’s” signature in life.   Grandpa Tussie never met a child he didn’t love and nurture.

Russell was a life member of the Mount Vernon Elks, Lodge 1604, a member of the American Legion Post 43 in Sedro-Woolley, the Burlington & Sedro Woolley Eagles  and a 52 year member of The Barley Boys.

Russell is survived by his wife, Jonna at the family home in Sedro-Woolley. Three step-children, Tanya Sparks and her husband Ray, Jeremy Zieber and Sondra Zieber. Two brothers: Timothy Rawls and his wife, Vicki and Michael Rawls, and his sister, Tami Gilbert and her husband, Steve. Three grandchildren, Jordan, Baker and Shania and six nieces and nephews: Shawn, Kylene, Ryan, Lindsey, Sheena and BJ and a great-nephew, Bryson Gilbert.

A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, November 8, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Hawthorne Memorial Park in Mount Vernon with Pastor Rick Miles of Day Creek Chapel officiating, followed by a potluck fellowship at the Burlington Eagles. Visitation is available from 9AM to 5PM, Oct. 30 to Nov. 6 at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.   The family suggests that memorials be made to Catholic Community Services Skagit Family Center or the North Puget Cancer Center at United General Hospital.

Tussie, the house just isn’t the same without. As hard as it is not to have you here we know you are in a better place, w/o pain, able to laugh, talk and eat.

    Jonna and Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Russ’ passing. I remember the last time I saw him at the shop. He always was so great to talk too when he came in. He thought the world of you and was always wanting to send you the prettiest and different flowers. We had many conversations about my Uncle Jack Greathouse, which he worked with at Rite Aid. We also had many conversations about flowers. He knew his stuff. Please know that we are thinking of you and your family during this very difficult time. Find comfort in your family and friends and know that he will be with you always in your heart. He and Uncle Jack will have plenty to talk about when they see each other.

    With our Deepest Sympathy,

I knew Russ from my working at Ephrata Drug. He was such a character. Funny and caring. He taught my husband and I the fine points of having salt water aquarium fish. He also taught me how to make great hotdog sandwiches. I always thought he was great and wondered what ever became of him after I stopped working there and then later when the drugstore was sold. He was a special person.

“Russie” had the best laugh ever! His whole body laughed. He was a very kind man and what I remember most is that he called me “Pamsy”..maybe he had nicknames for everyone..my son , Ryan, his nephew and Godson even named his first dog after Uncle Russie’s dog…Heidi..he was probably 5 years old and thought all dogs were supposed to be called Heidi… Hugs and love to all.

We knew Russell as a good neighbor & friend. He & Jonna would come to our vegetable sale each year & Russell would always encourage Earl with his helpful hints & knowledge about growing things. We would also chat with Russell when he was walking his beloved dog to pick up their mail & he also came in to visit us & our Quaker Parrots. We enjoyed his company alot. We will miss a good neighbor & special man.
