Sylvia Anderson

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

Sylvia Cordelia Anderson was born in Franklin, North Carolina on March 24, 1913 to Hezekiah and Hassie (Cloer) Dills.  She grew up in North Carolina and was united in marriage to Charles Anderson in 1928.   They moved to Birdsview, Washington in 1952 before eventually settling in Sedro-Woolley.

Our precious mother went to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at 5:29 p.m. on July 25, 2013 at the age of 100 years, four months and one day.  Her legacy left for us is one of boundless love and tender loving care.  Her life was her family, all 132 of us.  She made each of us feel special when we were with her.  Mother’s faith was the rock she built her life on and through many trials it never wavered, she shared it with everyone she met.  She loved her flowers, cooking for her family, and taking cast away dolls making them over with hand sewn clothes and beautiful hair.  Mother never gave up or discarded anyone or anything, she saw only the good in everyone and believed love could conquer all.

Sylvia is survived by her ten children: Rebecca Mudgett, Charles Kenneth (Jean), Alice Frizzell (Roy), Joan Gardinier (Keith), Mary Sego (Ron), Robert (Cheerie), Ted (Marlene), Gayle Ashbach (Dave), John (Janine), Ray (Debbie); 28 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren, and 40 great-great-grandchildren;  brother, Hez Dills of Sedro-Woolley; sister, Annie Stiener (Al) of Mount Vernon, and Ruth Southard of Franklin, North Carolina. She is also survived by special friends, Myrtle Frisbee and Louise Buchanan and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; daughter, Margie Guffie; grand-daughter, Gloria Guffie, and great-grandson, Jeremiah Johnson; her parents, Hezekiah and Hassie Dills; brothers, Elzia, Clifford, and Gordon Dills and sisters, Beulah Smith and Golda Burch.

We owe a special “Thank you” to United General Hospital and Sedro-Woolley Life Care Center for the wonderful care and treatment of our Mother and to Mother’s Pastor Harold Thornbrough of Valley Baptist Church for his caring support of the family. The family highly requests that memorials be made to the Valley Baptist Church, P.O. Box 267, Sedro-Woolley, WA  98284.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at 11:00 am at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley, followed by a graveside service at the Lyman Cemetery.  A reception will follow at the Valley Baptist Church in Sedro-Woolley

I am writing this note in behalf of the whole Ralph Bell family. We have been thinking of this whole family during this time of loss. It is wonderful to know that the bridge of friendships that began in Franklin, North Carolina and led to Washington so many years ago is still strong in spirit. Find comfort in each other and the path that Mrs. Anderson made for you.

    Dear Anderson Families …

I send you love and prayers as you each transition into life without the physical presence of your Mama. You have been so blessed to have her in your lives for such a long time ~ what an accomplishment to achieve 100 years surrounded by so many who loved her. She surely is entitled to, not only rest, but the grand reunion taking place with those who went before her.
Your parents raised the most wonderful children I have ever had the pleasure to know; each child talented in their own right, dignified, kind, courteous, loving and truly faithful, long term friends.
Bless your hearts and may God provide peace for each of you during this time. You have so many lovely memories of your Mama and Daddy and of the cherished times you spend together.
Much love to you all …

    Dear family,
I wrote Sylvia a letter a couple of years ago and was so surprised when she wrote back. I am the Secretary of the Anderson Reunion held in Franklin, NC each year. My mom was Gertie Dills, grandparents homer and Iley Lou Anderson Dills. I don’t know if any of you remember them. Sylvia was a gracious lady and dear to everyone. Look me up on facebook “Wanda Ledford Buchanan.” or email me. I would love family history and keeping up with your news. Wanda

Granny, I wish I was able to see you one last time. What I remember about you was that you were a loving warm hearted person and you loved everyone. Your smile could light up a room. I know that you are in a better place were you will live out your extended life full of love and warmth. That place is Heaven with the Angels. You will be watching over the ones you love. I will miss.

Mrs. Anderson was one of those people to leave a forever impression. I’ll always remember when she was helping in my Granny & Pa’s berry fields (along with many of her family) she was one of the nicest women I knew. Her happy smile and pleasant demeanor etched in my memory, she lived life as Jesus intended and she now will reap the well deserved rewards.

    My sympathy to the family.

Gran- AMAZING GRACE, you know you will always be my inspiration, your faith has took our family thru it all. You have been a light in this world and your reward is great. I was blessed to have you for a grandma and your memories and wisdom will always be in my heart. We go today not to say goodbye but to celebrate until we meet again this side of heaven. You will always be missed, I guess God thought a 100 years should be enough. Love you always!

  • Larki Aldridge

I had not seen Sylvia for over twenty years and when she walked by me at Beaulahs service, I heard her say, “there’s Larki,” and smiled and waved. She never forgot you and she always greeted you in a way that made you feel special. She was so much like her sweet mother, Granny Dills. I have been blessed to be a part of this wonderful family. My love/prayers go out to all of her loved ones.

Aunt Sylvia was a great woman of God! When I was a little girl, I spent many nights with her and Uncle Charlie. I played with my cousins, rode on their old horse and drank root beer floats it was a grand time! As I got older, I would visit and share what was going on in my life, she was always interested in what I had to say. I bought a couple dolls that she sold at one of her sales that I cherish. She always made me feel welcome when I visited. She had the most beautiful smile, her whole face glowed. I loved her very much and I will miss her, but I will see her again!!

  • Kellie Flaig

Granny ~ When my own Grandmother died years ago, you told me you would be my Grandmother from then on. You always greeted me with a hug, a big smile, and sometimes we would both tear up. I’m so happy I got to give you one last hug at your birthday party.

I always knew you were an Angel on this earth and now in Heaven. You will forever be missed by your wonderful family and friends.

  • Sandy Self Oatman

The kind of love Grandma felt for all of us was a love without condition. She may not have approved of everything we did, but she never lectured or judged. She just kept loving us. She lived a simple life, it didn’t take much to make her happy-a phone call, a card, a visit, a hug or kiss (she did love flowers). To think that someone like Sylvia was in our lives makes us all so proud and grateful. The mold has been broken indeed!
With great love and respect, thank you Grandma for just being you…Sandy

I am thinking and praying for you all. The world has lost a good and wonderful person and heaven has gained one. We will miss her and her beautiful smile until we see her again in glory.

My sister-in-law Lula Belle who wrote above, married to my brother Pierce, shared what joyous times they had visiting Aunt Sylvia. Lula Belle and Pierce traveled West for a 4 month trip seeing many wonderful national sights, but he said “more than once” after meeting Lula Belle’s Aunt Sylvia, nothing compared to meeting and being with this wonderful woman of God. He said the WHOLE trip was worth “just meeting her”. I wish I could have met her as well. Praying blessings over her precious family as they say goodbye, but knowing they will all be reunited. Thank you Sylvia for the lasting impression you made on me as a youth. You made me feel unconditionally accepted, as I’m sure others did also. You generated love, laughter, generosity, and kindness to others. I never heard complaining, griping, arguing, or having a bad word to say about anyone. Your positive attitude was amazing! Thank you

  • Patsy (Dills)Myers and spouse Dennis

Sylvia was my Aunt–( I am the daugher of her brother, Clifford Dills)> I actually never got to meet her
because she moved to Washington when I was only five years old and our family had moved to
Hayesville, NC from Franklin, NC, but my sister Lula Belle Luther and husband Pierce had visited
her in Washington and Lula Belle shared so many sweet memories of their visits with me and I began
to send her cards and felt like I did know her! She was so precious and loved her Lord! Just wish I
could have met her. I loved her so much. Patsy(Dills) Myers

  • Lula Belle & Pierce Luther

Aunt Sylvia was one of the most postitive persons I have ever known. She was always the highlight of our trips out there from Hayesville, North Carolina. It was such a blessing being with her. I met her for the first time in 2005 – we made five trips out there and every trip was so much fun giggling and setting up late, just enjoying her company. We had fun with all my aunts, uncle, and cousins that we met while visiting out there.

I will treasure all the memories of the times we visited with Aunt Sylvia. I loved her dearly and will miss seeing her smile and hearing her laugh. She was truly a child of God. She was a witness for her Lord to all who came in contact with her. She was a lovely servant and so hospitable to anyone who came around – and believe me, there were a lot of folk who came around. Her children and family can certainly say she was a Proverbs 31 woman.

She lived 100 fruitful years and I count it an honor to have spent time with her. My parents are dead, and I felt like she was my second mother. I am thankful she is with the Lord and will have no more suffering, and I will see her someday in the sweet by and by.

    Love beyond measure

    Lula Belle & Pierce Luther
Daughter of Sylvia’s brother Clifford Dills
