Vern Sims

Thursday, October 23rd, 2014

Vernon F. “Vern” Sims, a lifetime resident of Sedro-Woolley, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at his home at the age of 89 years.  He was born in Alert Bay, British Columbia on April 27, 1925 to Franklin Oliver and Florence Johanna (Draney) Sims.

Vern is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marie and his sons, Dan and his wife Sandi and Lance and his wife Jan all of Sedro-Woolley; four grandchildren, Nicole, Bridgitte, Caleb, and James and his wife Stacey and four great-grandchildren, Austyn, Abigayle, Colin, and Victoria.

Vern grew up in Sedro-Woolley and graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School in 1943.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1944 serving as a corporal in pilot training and as a physical education instructor; he also was a golden glove boxing participant during his service time.  After his discharge, Vern attended Washington State University and the University of Washington graduating with a degree in accounting.

He began his career in the automobile business 66 years ago working for Berglund Motors in Sedro-Woolley as the office manager.  Soon after, Vern was offered a sales position and won a trip to Hawaii by Ford Motor Co., which began his long and successful career in auto sales and service.  He purchased the Ford dealership in the early 1960’s and he later with the help of his sons established Honda dealerships in Mount Vernon in 1978, Wenatchee in 1983, and Bellingham in 1988.  Vern, at 89, had been very active all his life, both at work or on his farm.  He was always dressed in a suit, going to his office daily up to the last two weeks of his life.

Sedro-Woolley and being involved with the community was very important to Vern.  Some of his accomplishments were, member and past president of the Washington State Auto Dealers Association, Time Magazine Dealer of the Year, Pioneer Skagit County Family in 1997, Sedro-Woolley High School Community Recognition Award,  Grand Marshall of the Sedro-Woolley Loggerodeo Parade,  long time Board Member of InterWest Bank (later becoming Wells Fargo Bank),  and he was quite involved with the development of the North Cross State Highway, he developed the Cedar Ridge Estates at Lake 16 and Brick Yard Creek in Sedro-Woolley. Vern was a lifetime member of  George Baldridge Post #43 American Legion, Burlington United Lodge #93 F&AM and the Shrine.  He was a 50 year member of the Sedro-Woolley Rotary Club, serving as president from 1976-77 and was a Paul Harris Fellow.

Vern loved hunting with his friends and sons.  Their home was adorned with trophy mounts from hunting trips to Mongolia and Canada; he also enjoyed hunting and fishing in Alaska and Canada, bird hunting in Mexico as well as annual ski trips to Montana and other resorts with Marie for many years.

The family would like to extend a thank you to both Dr. Teak Martin and Dr. Duncan Landreth for all their care.  Also a special thanks to the Northwest Hospice Nurses and Visiting Angels for all their care.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 1:00PM at the Sedro-Woolley High School Auditorium with a reception to follow in the school cafeteria.  Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Northwest, Visiting Angels, The Landing, or a charity of your choice.

I didn’t know Vern until we bought our first Honda from his dealership over 10 years ago. I’ll miss the great talks I had with Vern at his Honda dealership in Burlington when we would come in for service or look at new Hondas. He would always greet me with a smile and we would discuss the advantages of various Honda models. I’ll miss him a lot.

I was shocked to learn of Vern’s passing. He was and is a legend in Skagit Valley and I don’t remember when he wasn’t around. He was such a gentleman, bursting with integrity and ethics. There was no one else like him.
I too remember how he supported the efforts of timber industry workers during the spotted owl debacle ~ always willing to help and lend a hand.
My folks (Bill and Vi Iund) bought many a vehicle from Vern over the years and I grew up thinking that was the “only” place in the Valley to get a car! He treated them with such respect and consideration.
My sympathy and condolences to Mrs. Sims and her family. What joy and love surrounded your family every day, 365 days a year for 70 years … you were truly blessed as were we all in our acquaintance and friendship with your husband and father.
God bless you all as you face a journey without Verns physical presence, but just remember he’ll be with you every day for the rest of your life and what a fabulous reunion you will have with him when you meet again.
    Most sincerely,
    Sherrie Iund Bond

I well remember the first time I met hiim, it was in our backyard in Birdsview. He was wearing a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a cigar clamped firmly in his teeth. He said; Here Charlie have a cigar, I come to trade cars with you! It was 1954 ford bright green, 6 cylinder 3 speed with overdrive, he drove away in our 1949 chevrolet. That was how Vern Sims got his start at Berglund Motors, by working long after everyone else was done for the day! I bought my first good car from him a 1955 chevrolet that belonged to a ferry captain. Over the years I worked for him and he was the best man I ever worked for, if you worked hard he respected you if you didn’t you were not around long! When I created FFACTS in support of the logging industry during the Spotted Owl contoversy Vern paid 1,500 a month and furnished a new vehicle in support of his friends during a hard time. When I ran for County Commissioner the Sims Family supported me through thick and thin and asked nothing in return. I can’t believe he is gone, he was always bigger than life and he did so very much for his community and friends! I will always be grateful to him for the many great moments we spent together, fishing in Alaska Vern and I both loved onions so he brought a 25lb bag. Everyday we made lunch with a slice of onion on both sides of the sandwich, we cooked them in our breakfast potatoes as well, finally Tom Perkins said; I like onions as well as the next man but not every day on everything.I could go on forever but I leave you with a line from Rudyard Kipling; Though I have belted you and flayed you you are a better man than I am. Vern Sims was quite simply a better man, that was loved by all who really knew him. R.I.P. my friend! Ted Anderson

I have worked for and with Vern for over 34 years. I can honestly say that I never regretted one single day. What a fine family to work for. Vern was always full of integrity and chose to “do the right thing”. I was honored to work for him and will miss him terribly. It is truly the end of an era but he has two fine sons to carry on his legacy. Marie, you have always been the rock in this family and I have always been inspired by the love and respect that Vern and the “boys” always gave to you. It was well deserved.
    Sincerely,
    Barb Demorest

We just recently had a conversation and a great laugh about how he sold cars upriver back in the ’50s. He was one heck of a salesman and a repository of local history. And lucky enough to find Marie of the Barbo family and share life with her for nearly 70 years. His suit was too big for him at the end but he always wore it out in public. I first got to know him more than 20 years ago when I edited the “International Loop” magazine for his favorite project, but I saw him a lot around town during high school more than 50 years ago. He lived life large and will be missed.

To the family of Vern Sims.
I met Vern in 1981, when I went to work at “Sims Honda” in Mount Vernon. Where I worked for 11 yrs.
We never knew when he was was going to show up at the store. He came in “a whirl-wind” did what he came for and he was gone.
The last few years I saw him about every 3 mos, as I went with my elderly friend to have her car serviced at “Sims Honda”. Always there daily and dressed in his usual, in suit and tie.
Only time I ever saw him in jeans, was a couple of weeks before his passing. Almost didn’t know who he was.
    I will miss seeing him.
All my thoughts and prayers go out to his family. God bless all of you.
    Sincerely, Karen Tinker
