George Henry Meins, 93 years of age, passed away on September 1, 2007 in Sedro-Woolley, Washington. He was born in Hamilton, Washington on April 18, 1914 to Fred and Anna Reichlt Meins one of six children.
George was raised in the Lyman, Washington area and graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School with the class of 1932. He served his country for four years in the United States Army during World War II and was stationed in Germany and other points in Europe.
He was married to Cleo Ailport in Tacoma, Washington and they would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on September 6, 2007. Together they raised two sons, Larry Burke and George Meins Jr.
George worked for many years for the Scott Paper Company in Hamilton and also raised beef cattle on his farm. He worked from 1950-1952 in Skagway, Alaska as a mechanic brakeman for the railroad from Whitehouse to Skagway.
He enjoyed camping with his wife in their motor home in various Eastern Washington sites and spent many summers in the town of Soap Lake. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and tending to a large vegetable and flower garden. George was an avid reader of newspapers and was well informed on international and local news. He especially enjoyed the company of his friends when they visited and he could hold his own in conversation. He liked watching football on TV.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his son George Jr., brothers, Fred, John, Al, and Earl and sisters, Madie and Anna.
He is survived by his wife, Cleo Meins of Hamilton and his son, Larry Burke and his wife Marjean of Sedro-Woolley. 5 grandchildren, Shari Mayville, Travis Meins, Alan Burke, Margo Burke, and Jody Burke all of Skagit County. 9 great grandchildren, Ashley Lewellen, Becki Mayville, Tyler Burke, Katie Burke, Taylor Burke, Jordan Burke and Makenzie Burke, Clint Meins, and Bailey Meins. He is also survived by a favorite niece, Debbie Meins.
Graveside Services will be Thursday, September 6, 2007 at 11:00AM at the Hamilton Cemetery with Pastor Ron Edwards of the Hamilton First Baptist Church officiating.
