GERTRUDE D. BEVER, 95, a longtime resident of the Hickson community near Sedro-Woolley passed away on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at the Country Care Adult Family Home in Sedro-Woolley.
She was born on January 20, 1911 in Spartanburg, South Carolina the daughter of Fleet & Dovie Haynes Marlow.
In 1913 the family moved to the Hickson community and Gertrude attended school in Burlington, graduating from Burlington Edison High School in 1929. On November 26, 1936 Thanksgiving Day she was united in marriage to Loel Bever in Sedro-Woolley and they made their home in the Hickson community. Gertie worked as a secretary/manager for the Sedro-Woolley Credit Bureau until taking a job with the Sedro-Woolley School District, working as a secretary at Mary Purcell Elementary school for many years, retiring in 1973.
Gertie was a very active and energetic woman who enjoyed roughhousing with her grandson, hunting moles with her shotgun, hiking, gardening and a variety of other outdoor activities. She was also very talented and enjoyed oil painting and china painting, flower arranging, crafts, cooking and writing poetry. She was also very giving and willing to help if anyone was in need, and was well known by family and friends for putting everyone else ahead of her own needs.
Gertie is survived by her 2 daughters, Judy Bever and Virginia Pitman and her husband, Dick, all of Sedro-Woolley. Her grandson, Jason Cole and his wife, Nickie of Haymarket, Virginia and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Loel in 1975; 4 sisters, Mattie Hayes, Bessie Allison, Nora Hatchett and Ellen Anderson and 3 brothers, Millard, Richard & Fred Marlow.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Hickson Firefighters Association, 20464 Prairie Road, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at 2:00 PM at the Greenhills Memorial Cemetery in Burlington with Jan Smith officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
