Joan Buchanan, 70, a lifelong Skagit County resident, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at St. Joseph Hospital in Bellingham, surrounded by her loving family and pastor.
Joan was born in Sedro-Woolley, WA on May 6, 1935, the daughter of Axel & Phyllis Hammond Jensen.
She was raised and attended school in Sedro-Woolley, graduating from Sedro-Woolley High School with the class of 1952.
On June 25, 1955 she was united in marriage to her soul mate, Fremont Buchanan in Lyman and they made their home in Hamilton until moving to Sedro-Woolley in 1969. In June of 2005 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Joan worked as a clerk at Malone Music and JC Penney until starting a long career with Oliver-Hammer Clothing, where she schmoozed with customers for nearly 25 years. She then volunteered her time as a clerk at the Sedro-Woolley Police Department for several years.
Joan was a charter member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Burlington, where she has been a member for 54 years. She enjoyed family history and was a genealogy buff, and shopping; she was known as ‘Granny Go’ to her grandchildren and family.
She is survived by her children and their spouses; Jeff & Julie Buchanan and Julia & Tony Sosa, all of Sedro-Woolley. 4 grandchildren, Janel Woiwod and her husband Eric; and Renee, Jason & Geoffrey Buchanan; 1 great-granddaughter, Gracie Rose Woiwod; Her brother, Roy Jensen and his wife Dalene of San Diego, CA and 1 niece and 2 nephews. Close & special friends, Doug & Stephanie Wood and Dan & Sherry Adams.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Axel & Phyllis Jensen; her husband of 50 years, Fremont ‘Poppy’ in Sep, 2005; a son, Jon; great-granddaughter, Aubrey Rose Woiwod and a brother, Neil Jensen.
Joan’s family request that memorials be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, 324 Avon Avenue, Burlington, WA or the Moses Creek Baptist Church, c/o Earl Stephens, 1562 Moses Creek Road, Cullowhee, NC 28779.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 31, 2006 at 11:00 am at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley with Pastor Leon Meyer of the Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery. Visitation available at and services under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
