Maxine Teresa Williams, age 68, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2007 at the Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, WA. She was born September 20, 1938 on the Swinomish Reservation in LaConner, WA, the daughter of Gus and Aurelia Hillaire Stone Sr.
Maxine grew up and resided at Swinomish for many years until residing at Tsawwassen, British Columbia for the past 11 years. She was a homemaker and commercial fisherman, beach seining at Lone Tree Point and other area’s for many years. Maxine was a member of the Swinomish Indian Tribe, a former treasurer for over 25 years of the Swinomish Smoke House Organization and was instrumental in bringing back the Long House to Swinomish. She was involved with all the activities at Swinomish and was known for gathering and storing traditional foods for the Tribe.
Maxine was married to Gordon Williams on March 13, 1971 in Vancouver, BC.
She is survived by her husband Gordon Williams of Delta, BC. Her sister, Bernadette Stone and her husband Ken Edwards of LaConner, WA and a brother Ed Little of Anacortes. 4 grandchildren, Josie Ann Damien and her husband William, Carrie Robeta Gustafson and her husband Greg, Theresa James and her husband Loren, and Alisha Bray. 7 great-grandchildren, Jamie Damien, Eyoyyn Sam Gustafson, Landy James, Jamall James, Tasyha James, Keri Dwyn Bray, and Jaden Bray. Numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son James Sam Williams, 3 sisters, Madeline Cayou, Matilda Cayou, and Velma Cayou, and a brother Gus Stone Jr.
An All Denomination Prayer Service will be held Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at the Swinomish Social Services Building in LaConner at 7:00 PM with a Funeral Service to follow on Thursday, March 1, 2007 at 10:00 AM at the Tsawwassen Long house in Delta, BC with interment to follow at the Tsawwassen Cemetery.
