Norman W. ‘Jiggs’ Simmons, 83, a longtime resident of the Skagit Valley passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2005 at Country Care Adult Family Home in Hamilton.
He was born on May 19, 1922 in St. Joseph, Missouri, the son of William and Dixie Counts Simmons. As a young man he came to Skagit County and has since made the Skagit Valley his home.
Jiggs served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific during WWII and later worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He was united in marriage to Emma Waldrop. She preceded him in death in 1995.
He worked for Concrete Nor’West as a truck driver until his retirement in the 1980’s.
He enjoyed creating things in his woodshop and selling them.
He is survived by his 5 daughters and son-in-laws, Norma Sue Smith and her husband Jerry of Mount Vernon, Eileen Smith and her husband Joe of Colville, WA, Irene Burden and her husband Dr. Ronald of Burlington, Sharon Nielson and her husband Randy of Sedro-Woolley and Chris Bassett and her husband Tom of Quincy, WA. A sister, Pat Ray and 3 brothers, Eddie, Vernon and Jerry Simmons and many grandchildren and great and great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter. Mary Murphy and a grandson, Scott Nielson.
The family would like to thank Skagit Hospice, Butch and Diane Hoyle of Country Care Adult Family Home for taking such good care of him. The family suggests memorials be made to Skagit Hospice, 2031B Hospital Drive, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284.
A pot luck and Life Celebration for Jiggs will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2005 at 1:00 pm at the Sedro-Woolley Eagles Club.
Cremation was under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
