Nick Vlahovich, 93, a resident of Mount Vernon, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at the Mira Vista Care Center in Mount Vernon.

He was born on December 6, 1917 in Ronald, Washington, the son of Matthew & Mary (Starcevic) Vlahovich.

In the early 1920’s the family moved to Sedro-Woolley where Nick was raised and attended school, graduating from Sedro-Woolley High School with the class of 1936.

During WW II he served his country in the U.S. Army.

Nick worked as a welder at Skagit Steel/Bendix in Sedro-Woolley for many years until his retirement in 1983.

In 1965 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Riggs Waters in Burlington and they made their home in Sedro-Woolley until moving to Mount Vernon in 1971.

He was a longtime member of the Steel Workers Union.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting, camping, RVing and working in his yard.

Nick is survived by his wife, Dorothy at the family home in Mount Vernon; his children, Julie Stimhagen, Steve & Jeff (Vlahovich) Gunderson and Janie; his step-son, Wallace Waters and his wife Cheryl;  his brother, Jim Vlahovich and his wife Joan of Sedro-Woolley and Sue Jolley of Fruitland, Idaho; grandchildren, Lisa Dunn, Dean Stimhagen, Shane & Ron Waters, Sheri Shannon and Teri Swenson; great-grandchildren, Dane, Jonas, Destrie & Merrick and Ryder Dunn and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, John & Tom and 2 sisters, Anne & Francis.

A Graveside Inurnment service will be held on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 3:00 pm at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery with Bishop Jim Christensen officiating.  Services and cremation are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
