CHARLES NATHAN SELF, SR., 82, a longtime Hamilton area resident, passed away on Thursday April 8, 2004 at the Life Care Center of Skagit Valley in Sedro-Woolley.
He was born on February 23, 1922 in Wolf Creek, Tennessee, one of thirteen children of William & Lillie Mae Self. He was raised and attended school in Tennessee. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II, seeing action in the European Theatre and was held for six months in a German POW camp. On January 5, 1946 he was united in marriage to Pauline Pressnell. They made their home in North Carolina where Charles worked as a farmer. In 1956 they came to Washington, settling in the Lyman-Hamilton area. For a while he worked in shake mills with his brothers, then as a tree faller and bucker for Scott Paper Co., retiring in the mid 1980’s after 22 years of service.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and woodworking, and he and his wife Pauline enjoyed making wood yard ornaments for family and friends.
Charles is survived by his mother, Lillie Mae Self of Burlington. Two sons, Charles Nathan Self, Jr. of Hamilton and Willie Gene Self, and wife Diane of Walla Walla, WA. Four daughters, Brenda Gail Branham, and husband Chuck of Clackamas, OR, Dorothy Louise Rohman, and husband Harry of Hamilton, Carolyn Sue Self in Texas and Mildred Yvonne Mayo, and husband Willard of Fairbanks, AK. Six brothers, Calvin, Homer, Lewis, Luther, Cecil and Jesse Self. Two sisters, Lillie and Ruth, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, William, his wife, Pauline, in 1999 and four brothers.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s or Cancer Association.
Graveside services will be held on Monday April 12, 2004 at 11:00 AM at the Hamilton Cemetery. Pastor Ron Edwards of the Hamilton Baptist Church officiating.
