CLAYTON D. SELF, 93, a longtime Lyman area resident, passed away at the Creekside Retirement Community in Burlington on Friday September 19, 2003.
Clayton was born on November 18, 1909 in Tennessee, the son of William L. & Bertha L. Rowland Self. Clayton grew up and attended school in Tennessee until the age of 15, when he went to work in the woods to help support his family. On September 25, 1935 he was married to Pearl Crowder in Cocke County, TN and they made their home in Tennessee until 1941 when they came to Skagit County. They lived briefly in Hamilton before settling in Lyman. They have made a home together for almost 68 years. They had just recently moved from their home in Lyman to the Creekside Retirement Community. Clayton worked in the woods for 40 years. Besides working in the woods as a young man in Tennessee; Clayton worked as a timber faller for Lyman Timber, worked as a self employed contract logger and also for the Scott Paper Co. until a disabling accident occurred in 1965, forcing his retirement. That gave him time to do the things that he enjoyed, such as hunting and fishing, camping and photography. He was always taking pictures of his family.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, Pearl, in Burlington. 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Richard & JoAnne Self of La Conner and William & Sharon Self of Mossyrock, WA. 6 grandchildren, James Self Kim and Joseph Self. Sandra Oatman Tom, Cheryl Goldman Grant, Lori Morrison Spencer, and Jana Ott Jon. 11 great-grandchildren. A brother and sister-in-law, Howard & Lucille Self of Hamilton and a sister, Ruth Moore of Sedro-Woolley. Also numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Otha, Estelle, Roe, Denton, Joe, Wayne, Ed and Lattie Self.
Memorials to the Lyman Cemetery Fund are suggested.
