ENLOE OWENS NEWMAN, 79, a Bridgeport, Washington resident, passed away at his son’s home in Big Lake, WA on Tuesday February 24, 2004 following a brief battle with cancer.
He was born on November 28, 1924 in Arkansas, the son of Perry & Beatrice Hooper Newman.
At the age of 16 he set out from Arkansas to see the world and ended up in Eastern Washington where he worked in the fruit orchards for a couple of years. He returned to Arkansas for a while, then was on the road again, ending up in California. He went back & forth from California to Arkansas, finally settling in California in the late 1940’s. There he worked as a steel molder and foundryman, and as a hobby built small flat bottom hydroplane type speed boats.
In 1968 he moved to Sedro-Woolley, WA where he again worked as a molder, working for Skagit Steel until his retirement in the mid 1970’s. He lived in Sedro-Woolley until the early 1990’s when he moved to Bridgeport, WA.
Enloe was an avid fisherman and spent countless hours fishing on the Columbia River with his fishing buddy Jack Neumann. He was also a wonderful wood craftsman and builder. He was a private man but loved his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his sons, James Newman, and his wife Donna, of Big Lake, WA and Enloe O. Newman, II of Mount Vernon, WA. 4 grandsons and their wives, David & Serina Newman, James & Paula Newman, Bob & Hanah Newman and Dan & Denise Newman; numerous great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. 2 sisters, Reba Anderson of Lavaca, AR and Beatrice Johnson of Fort Smith, AR, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family extends a heart felt thank you to Ed & Janet Conklin and to Enloe’s many friends in the Bridgeport and Brewster communities.
Burial will be at Steep Hill Cemetery in Sebastian County, Arkansas. Arrangements under direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
