GRACE BERNTSON SLIGAR, 88, a Sedro-Woolley area resident, passed away on Saturday November 15, 2003 at the Mira Vista Care Center in Mount Vernon, WA.
She was born on March 31, 1915 in Leadore, Idaho, the daughter of James & Lena Hoffman Hickman. Grace was raised and attended school in Logan, Utah. In 1935 she was united in marriage to Alton Berntson and they made their home in Logan, and Grace raised her family and worked as a sales clerk at various department stores in the area. They also lived in Heyburn, Idaho. Mr. Berntson passed away in 1970. In 1973 she married Doyle Sligar and they made their home in Anacortes, WA. From 1978 until Doyle’s death in 1988, they operated Little Beaver Wood Products in Anacortes. Grace was an avid fisherman and she was happiest when fishing for salmon in the San Juans. She loved to be with her family and she also was a great fan of the Mariners baseball team.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Alton Kay & Sharan Berntson of Lynnwood, WA. Her daughter, Laura Lee Berntson of Sedro-Woolley, and a step-daughter, Margene Pumphrey and husband Ted of Meridian, Idaho. Two sisters, Ida Brangham of Logan, UT and Betty Nelson of San Diego, CA. 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a step-son, Conrad Berntson.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff at Mira Vista Care Center for their care and friendship during Grace’s stay. They also suggest memorials be made to the Mira Vista Care Center Residence Council or a charity of your choice.
