Hazel Ann Stephan, 88, our beloved mother and grandmother passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Redding, California on Saturday, August 30, 2008 from severe lung disease.
Hazel was born on October 29, 1919 in Rapid City, South Dakota. Her family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado where she attended school. While in high school, her family moved to Sedro-Woolley where she graduated from high school. She also attended Western Washington University for one year.
Hazel married George William Stephan and they were married for 67 years. They resided in Bellingham for 62 years before moving to Redding, CA in 1999 to be closer to their family. After George’s death, she became a resident at River Oaks Retirement Center, where she spent her remaining years.
Hazel had many interests all through her life. She was an avid reader, bridge player, piano and violin player, golfer, swimmer and an excellent cook. She belonged to the Senior Citizen’s Center in Redding and she participated in their bridge group as well as the bridge group at River Oaks Retirement Center.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Jean Bagley and her husband, Don; her son, Richard Stephan and his wife, Ellie; her grandchildren, Michael Bagley, Laurie Bagley, Marrianne Fitzpatrick, Cristine McKinley and Cathy Stephan; 5 great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Larry Stephan and his wife, Arlene; sister-in-law, Alice Tecker and husband, Lester and many nieces and nephews.
Inurnment will be at Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery
