John R. Muhlbeier, 83, a resident of Sedro-Woolley, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2004 at the Mira Vista Care Center in Mount Vernon, WA.
He was born January 12, 1921 in Bowden, North Dakota, the son of Andrew and Ida Free Muhlbeier. In 1937 John moved to Sedro-Woolley from North Dakota. He attended and graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School in 1940. He started working at Skagit Steel in 1940. During WWII he served his country with the U.S. Navy, and upon his return from the service returned working for Skagit Steel as a molder, which lasted for 41 years.
John enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodcrafts. He was also an avid auto and motorcycle racing fan, and received a "Most Dedicated Fan" appreciation award from Hannigan Speedway in Bellingham for his years of support. He also enjoyed boat racing and was a member of the Whidbey Island Roostertails Club. He was also a member of the Allied Foundry & Molders Union, the NRA, and the Wildcat Steelhead Club.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Willard and Carlene Muhlbeier of Bellingham, sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Val Welman of Renton, a sister-in-law, Norine Muhlbeier of Sedro-Woolley, 3 nieces and 4 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Arthur and Calvin and a sister, Marion Holt.
