Judy Karen Weynands

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

Judy Karen Weynands, 71, a long time resident of Skagit County passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2009 in Miami, Florida.

Judy was born on February 25, 1937 in Spokane, Washington, the daughter of Henry Hank Richard & Edmo Lois Morris. She was raised and attended school in Sedro Woolley, graduating as valedictorian from Sedro Woolley High School with the class of 1954. Following graduation she attended Washington State University and later worked as an executive secretary at Shell Oil Refinery in Anacortes where she met her husband, Hendrik Hank Weynands, who was from the Netherlands. On December 17, 1961 they were married.

Judy, a truly beautiful woman inside and out was always composed, patient, kind and elegant. A devoted mother, Judy was very supportive of her children’s education, volunteering at Big Lake Elementary School while they attended. She also was very active in supporting the causes of Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle and volunteered time at Skagit Valley College.

In 1983 her husband was diagnosed with a severe illness and with the support of her children Judy took on a major supporting role in his treatment and care until his passing in 1986. Strength of character, devotion to her husband and belief in strong family values were only a few defining characteristics of this remarkable woman.
After her husband’s passing and with her children grown, Judy reentered the work force in the real estate industry. She enjoyed success for many years as a member of the Skagit Association of Realtors working with A.R.E Realty and later with Skagit Prudential Realtors.

Judy, a lover of the arts, played piano and traveled often with a group of friends to Seattle to see productions at the Fifth Avenue and Paramount Theaters. She also enjoyed the occasional show on Broadway in New York. In recent years Judy cherished regular visits from her brother Richard Morris and sister Beverly Kramlich. She enjoyed regular outings with her good friend Mary Lou Durgin and would often be joined by Mike and Norma King.

A love for travel but having a fear of flying, Judy would put this fear aside and enjoyed many adventures with her husband traveling to his native Holland many times. She along with her daughter Lora would also join the rest of the family in Alaska to participate in her husband’s commercial fishing business bringing her strong family values to an industry known for its rough and tumble atmosphere. In later years Judy along with her sons would join her daughter and her husband on many trips onboard their sailing yacht, Andromeda La Dea’. She saw many exotic places including Croatia, Italy and the Caribbean. It was on one of these trips the family completed a journey started many years earlier by her husband Hank by sailing from Bonaire to Costa Rica via the Panama Canal, one of the only major shipping routes in the world not seen by Hank. It was the end of an era in which she took great pride.

Judy is survived by her children, Hendrik Rick Weynands and his wife, Kimberly of Mount Vernon, Lora Drasner and her husband, Fred of Miami, Florida, Michael Weynands and his wife, Anna of Burlington, granddaughter Jensen Weynands and Mark Weynands of Kirkland. Her sister, Beverly Kramlich of Kent, several nieces and nephews, her sister in-law, Nelly Weynands who lives in Debilt, Netherlands and sister in-law, Darcy Morris. She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry & Edmo Morris, her husband, Hendrik and her brother, Richard ‘Dick’ Morris.

The family suggests that memorials be made in Judy’s name to ‘Make A Wish Foundation’ http://www.wish.org/ and or the ‘Boys and Girls Club of Sedro Woolley’ http://www.bgcskagit.org.
