He was born on November 17, 1936 in Faribault, MN, the son of Donald and Roberta Crawford Ochs. He was raised and attended school in Faribault, graduating from Bethlehem Academy in 1954, where he was a member of the football team. After attending the University of Minnesota, he received a B.A. degree from Drake University in Des Moines, IA in 1958. Before moving to Alaska in the early 1960’s he also had studied at the American Institute of Foreign Trade in Glendale, AZ.
Peter lived in Cordova, Alaska for more than 40 years. He was considered an Alaska Pioneer. He called Cordova his home and he still has many friends that live and work all around the Prince William Sound.
While in Cordova, Peter was involved in construction and fishing enterprises. He was a partner in several joint ventures for the salmon and kelp businesses. He was a charter member of the International Longshoremen’s Association AFL-CIO in Alaska and longtime member of the Cordova Elks and Moose Clubs.
Peter loved Alaska but also loved to travel outside of Alaska. He ventured the world, having traveled to Japan, South America, Mexico, Central America and many other places throughout the United States.
He is survived by his mother, Roberta Dingmann of Redding, CA, his children; Kristjan Ochs and his wife Monica of Mount Vernon, WA, Angela McTaggart and her husband Jack of Bow, WA and Anthony Ochs and his companion Lisa McLaughlin of Corvallis, OR; 4 grandchildren Emma and Riley Ochs and Molly and Maggie McTaggart. His sister, Gretchen Shine of New York City, NY, brother Donald F. Ochs, Jr., of Minneapolis, MN, step-brothers David Dingmann of Summerville, Fl and Larry Dingmann of Wilmington, NC and step-sister, Diane Gallivan of Denton, TX also survive him. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews also survive him. His father Donald, his stepfather, Carl and his sister, Alice Catherine, preceded him in death. His children’s mother, Loa, also preceded him in death.
At Peter’s request, services will be held at a later date in Faribault and in Cordova. The family suggests memorials to Skagit Hospice or your favorite charity.
