Raymond Edward Iund, 85, a former longtime Skagit County resident passed away at his home in Stanwood on Monday January 15, 2007.
He was born on December 20, 1921 in Okmulgee, Wyoming, the son of John & Martha Vann Iund.
Ray was raised and attend school in Gillette, Wyoming until enlisting in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938.
On Sept 16, 1940 he was inducted into the U.S. Army serving his country during WW II in the Philippines and the South Pacific. After his discharge in May of 1945 he was united in marriage to Martha May Dickinson in Sedro-Woolley on November 18, 1945. They made their home in Concrete and Ray worked in the woods as a highrigger and choker setter for Dickinson & Sons Logging, Van De Grift Logging and Cunningham Logging for several years. Ray was also a Licensed Practical Nurse at Northern State Hospital, working there during the winter shut downs from logging. In the mid 1960’s he and Martha operated the Midway Grocery in Birdsview until they moved to Mountlake Terrace, residing there until 1969 when they moved to Forks, WA where Ray worked cutting cedar shakes, working for Fair Shakes. In 1974 they moved to Wickersham where they operated the Wickersham Grocery Store. In 1976 they returned to Mountlake Terrace until moving to Sumner where they made their home until finally settling in Stanwood in 1999.
He has been a member of the American Legion, George Baldridge Post 43 in Sedro-Woolley since 1945.
Ray is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha at the family home in Stanwood. His children and their spouses, Rusty & Di Iund of Chehalis, Kitty & Bill Voth of Sedro-Woolley, Dee & Mike Graham of Stanwood and Raymond & Tina Iund of Enumclaw. 9 grandchildren, Tammy Woodard, Lisa Marie Kindle, Dustin & James Anderson, Christina Cash, Gordon & Matthew Graham and Raelynn & Becky Iund. 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Leon & Bill Iund and a sister, Louise Draper.
The family suggest memorials be made to Children’s Hospital.
Visitation is available at Lemley Chapel on Thursday & Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and on Saturday from 9 to 11:30 am.
Graveside Services with military honors will be held at the Hamilton Cemetery on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at 1:00 pm followed by a memorial service at the Hamilton Baptist Church at 2:00 pm with Pastors Russ Iund and Rick Bear officiating.
