Susan E. Irving, age 91, a longtime resident of Sedro-Woolley, passed away Monday, December 28, 2009 at the Life Care Center of Skagit Valley in Sedro-Woolley, WA.

She was born on September 24, 1918 in Lincoln, Nebraska to George W. and Margaret A. Clark Irving. She was raised and attended school in Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. During WWII, she served as a nurse in the Army Nurses Corps.

After the war, she came to Seattle where in conjunction with the University of Washington she was a Psychiatric Nurse and served as the Director of Education at Northern State Hospital in Sedro-Woolley and as a teacher for the nursing program at Skagit Valley College.

She also served as Director of Education at Tacoma Community College thru Western State Hospital and at Spokane Community College thru Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake. She retired in 1978 moving to La Conner and in 1990, she finally settled in Sedro-Woolley.

Susan is survived by a niece, Ann McGuigan of Apple Valley, MN and two nephews, Jim Miller of Crystal Lake, IL and Michael Miller of St. Charles, IL. She was preceded in death by her friend and companion Naoma Gray in 1978 and her sisters, Marguerite Miller and Isabel Ansley and a brother Timothy Irving.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley with Rosalie Robles of the Federation of Christian Ministries officiating. Private inurnment will be at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery.
