William H. ‘Papa’ Wood, age 82, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2008 at his home in Lyman, Washington.
He was born March 28, 1926 in Caney Fork, North Carolina to Nelson and Bertha Phillips Wood.
Hub grew up in North Carolina and later served with the U.S. Navy with the Seabees during WWII. After his discharge he was united in marriage to Dorothy L. Parker on March 5, 1946 in Georgia. He has been a resident of Skagit County since 1952 and has resided in Lyman since 1954.
Hub worked at the Lone Star Cement Plant in Concrete for a number of years, he later logged, and for 16 years till his retirement, he worked as a powder monkey for the Skagit County Public Works Department. He also was a steelhead guide on the Skagit River for many years.
Hub enjoyed hunting especially for deer and grouse, creek and river fishing, especially trout fishing at Gorge Lake, spending time at his property on Twin Lakes near Winthrop, and as a young man and in later years, he loved to chase the hounds, and he was an avid sports fun especially watching the Mariners . He was a member of the American Legion and was a volunteer fireman for District 8 for many years and he was the patriarch of four generations of fire fighters.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy L. Wood of the family home in Lyman. 3 sons; Ron Wood and his wife Irina, Don Wood and his wife Patty, and Darrell Wood all of Sedro-Woolley. 7 grandchildren; Scott Wood, Travis Wood and his wife Tammy, Karen McDonnell and her husband John, Todd Wood, Chris Wood and his companion Ashley, Katee Wood, Wesley Wood, and a step-granddaughter; Natalie Wood. Step-Great-Grandchildren; Daniel Morgan, Brett Wood, Nick Wood, and 1 great-grandchild that is due within the next 2 weeks. A sister Bonnie Nations of Lyman and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters; Beulah Melton and Winnie Raby and 6 brothers; Elzie, Ira, Lester, Voney, Clarence, and Homer.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, December 18, 2008 at 11:00AM at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley with Pastor Wayne Hutchins of the Lyman Baptist Church officiating with interment to follow with Military Honors at the Lyman Cemetery. A reception will follow the services at the Lyman City Hall. Memorials are suggested to the East Skagit County Sheriff Dept. Detachment Christmas Party 600 S.
