Carl Browning

Wednesday, January 4th, 2023

Carl Vernon Browning, 92, a longtime Skagit County resident, passed away January 4, 2023, following a period of declining health.

He was born May 8, 1930, in Sylva, North Carolina to William Bryant & Lou Ellen (Young) Browning.  Carl grew up on a farm, growing crops, plowing with livestock, and learning lumber cutting skills.  In 1949, Carl moved to Sedro-Woolley, Washington and became employed as a shake sawyer two weeks after arriving.  Carl met his wife, Christine McDaniel, and they were married January 14, 1950, in Clear Lake, WA and lived there a short time.  They then made their home in Sedro-Woolley, raising their four children there.  They made lifetime friends with their Cook Road Neighbors.  Carl retired from being a shake sawyer after 30 plus years “with all 10 fingers” as he would say.

After retirement, Carl and Christine enjoyed traveling in their RV to their snowbird place in Yuma, Arizona, making many friends and exploring the desert.  Going to the monthly Darrington Blue Grass jams was one of Carl’s favorite things.

Five decades after moving from Clear Lake they returned after building a home there.  There they also befriended their Clear Lake neighbors.  Carl was truly blessed with his incredible Sedro-Woolley and Clear Lake neighbors.

Carl is survived by son, Fred Browning; daughters, Debbie Browning and Terri Browning; grandchildren, Soren Browning, Sarah Roy, Doug Browning, and William Walsh, all of Washington State; brothers, Claude (JoAnne) Browning, Floyd (June) Browning and Harold Browning; sister, Elva Rankin; many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Christine; son, Gary Browning; sisters, Lillie Browning, Nellie Browning, Martha Fox, Etta Fox and Jeannette Fowler.

Carl requested no Services.  His wish was we gather later to remember the good times.  A Celebration of Life will occur in the Spring.  In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Darrington Blue Grass Association.  Please share your memories of Carl and sign the online guest register.

We are saddened by the loss of your father Carl. He was such a sweet man and would often stop by our shop just to say “Hi” or tell us how he was doing. We enjoyed these visits and looked forward to more. Our thoughts go out to the family during this difficult time.
