Charlotte Boome

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

Charlotte June Boome, known as Seqwamiia, was born on June 7, 1931 in Sumas, British Columbia.  June passed away peacefully on April 23, 2013 in Sedro-Woolley, Washington surrounded by her family.

As a small child she lost her mother and- like so many others- was plucked from her tribal community and forced to endure the boarding schools of the assimilation era. She was a survivor of cultural genocide, and carried that burden her entire life. After graduating boarding school and starting a family she became a nurse- a lofty aspiration for a Native American woman in those days.

June was a descendent hereditary Chief Xey:teleq of the Sumas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence “Knuckle” Boome; parents, John Bolan and Lotte Silver; her daughters Gloria, Brenda, and Lorna Jean Smith; son-in-law Robert Humes and her unborn grandchild.

June is survived by her children, Ivan M. Francis and his wife Rosi, Michael L. Francis and his wife Anne, and Jason Boome and his wife Jerdie of Sedro-Woolley; her daughter, Lisa Boome and her husband Leonard Rodriguez of Sedro-Woolley and many grandchildren, Gladys Williams, Lorne Boome, Brenda Boome, Bridget Boome, David Bryan, Beverly Bryan, Dennis Bryan, Bernadine Macias, Violet Boome, Rita Boome, Valerie Williams, Janie Williams, Janet Williams, Brenda Francis-Thomas and her husband Christopher, Marcia Rodriguez, Kalika Elofson, Wade Francis and his wife Corina, Christina Francis, Joseph Rodriguez, Amanda and Joyce Boome. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, and many other family members.

Prayer services will be held on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Upper Skagit Gymnasium followed by Funeral Services on Saturday, April 27 at 10 am with John Cayou officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
