David Hilliard Self

Tuesday, January 30th, 2024

David Hilliard Self, 89, of Sedro-Woolley, Washington passed away on Tuesday January 30, 2024 at the home of his youngest son Jason H. Self and daughter-in-law Renee.

David was born on March 3, 1934 to William Hilliard and Lilly Mae (Presnell) Self in New Port Tennessee.  He was married to Leona Lios Jones on September 5, 1953, at the time of their marriage Leona was 16 years old and David was 19.  They had been married for seventy blessed years at the time of David’s passing.

Through the years David made many friends and worked in several different places of business. He worked for Scott Paper Logging, Draper Valley Poultry Processing, Vande Grift Shake Mill, Christianson Brother’s Shake Mill, mentioning several times that VandeGrift was his favorite of all his career opportunities.

At the end of David’s life he was paid a visit by a friend and acting pastor of the Lyman Baptist Church, Jim Cook who prayed with David as he asked the Lord Jesus into his life.

David enjoyed the simple life, believing in “taking only what you need”.  Always helping others if you can is a philosophy that he lived by and always putting in a hard day’s work.

He loved camping, fishing, hunting, and viewing nature in all of it’s glory.  He spoiled his kids and grandchildren with love and a twenty-dollar bill here and there. He also enjoyed watching his W.W.E. Wrestling on T.V.  David loved his grandkids, and a few pieces of candy were involved as well over the years.  Among his many hobbies giving his children and grandchildren a hard time was his favorite, he often greeted them by saying, “Hello there uglier than me!”  This proved that David lived for a smile and a giggle surrounded by love which was worth its weight in gold.

David was often a quiet man but his love for his family got bigger and bigger as time passed by.

David is survived by his wife of 70 years Leona Lois Self, his daughters; Kathy Noles, Donna (Christopher) Howard, Maleta Eaves, Lora (Robert) Parker, Claudia (Phillip) Smith, sons; Greg Self and Arbie Adams, Jason (Renee) Self, siblings Lilly Fretz and Cecil Self, grandchildren; Shasta Jaksha, Miranda Haussler, April Noles, Frank Noles, Jr, Ryan Bacus, Rae Ammons, Chad rogers, Keith Rogers, Chris Rogers, Sheila Wilfong, Tina Clark, Wade Parker, Shavonne Parker, Brennen Parker, Carrie Ann Gilbert, Richard Self, Tara Kinuthis, John Wolfe, Chevy Wolfe, Colby Patterson, Luke Patterson, Ella Self, 41 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren, and his dog “Little Girl”.

David was preceded in death by his father, William Hilliard Self, and his mother Lilly Mae Self, his brothers, Vernon, Homer, Calvin, Sammy, Sherill, Lewis, Conley, and Jesse Self, his sister Ruth Sheriff Self, grandson David J. Wolfe, and great grandson Desmond R. Rogers

A Memorial Service will be held at Lyman Baptist Church, Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 12:30 PM.
