Del Olander

Del Olander

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

Delbert “Del” Joseph Olander, 77, passed away at home on the property in Hoogdal where he was born, lived, and farmed his entire life.  He went to his permanent home on August 6, 2013 with his loving wife at his side.

Del was born to Harry and Vera Olander (Nilsson) on August 11, 1935 in a bedroom in the family home.  He joined a family of two brothers and one sister.

Del began school at the two room Hoogdal School House, went to Samish Elementary, then graduated from Sedro Woolley High School in 1953.  He was active in planning their 60th class reunion for later this month.  After high school, Del worked for Jack Holt’s TV shop, then served a short time in the National Guard.  His Service career was cut short when he was called home to care for his parents.  Del worked at the Bendix Plant (Skagit Steel) in Sedro Woolley for 35 years, until medical problems forced him to retire.  He kept active during his retirement playing music with his band (The Renegades) and trying to enjoy the “not so golden years”.  He also enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and spending time with family and friends over a good BBQ or potluck.

In 1964, Del married his favorite “groupie”, Sharyn “Sue” Neely, whom he met at the dances he played at in Alger.  They welcomed two daughters to complete their family.  Del and Sue started a Christmas Tree Farm, which they ran for quite a few years.

Del was a member of the Teamster’s Union, Hoogdal Community Club, Samish Valley Grange, and the Old Time Fiddlers.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Olander (Neely); two daughters, Kim Olander Mayer (Bill) and Tammy Olander (Will Growney); siblings, Henry “Hank” Olander (Carol Handy), Harold “Hal” Olander (Kathy), and Mildred “Mil” Gerard; a cousin, Art Bowers; 3 granddaughters, Kailey, Ashton, and Danica Growney; many special nieces, nephews, and friends and several 3rd “daughters”.  Del’s little dog, Lizzie, also survives him.

Del was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Virgil and Thelma Neely; brothers-in-law, Eugene and Dan Neely, Giles Evans, Floyd Gerard; sister-in-law, Gladys Olander; nephews, Brad Evans and Brent Olander; and cousin, Bernice Bowers.

A celebration of life for Del will be held on Saturday, August 10th at 2:00 pm at the Samish Valley Grange. In lieu of flowers the family wishes you send memorials in his name (he was a cancer survivor) to The American Cancer Society.

I am so sorry to hear of Del’s passing. Del and his signing group, The Renagades, have brought so much pleasure and joy to my days at the LaConner Retirement Inn. It was a special treat to see Del, Sue and the band for my 87th birthday out at the Grange. They all visited with me and my granddaughter that day and it felt like I was with lifelong friends. Thank you for your kindness, smiles and sharing your talents to bring joy to others. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

    Tammy, Kim, and Mrs. O,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I spoke with Mr. O at the all school picnic. I loved calling your dad Mr. O!!! His happy personality was always so nice. It would draw you to him and your Mom. Both are such good people. Your dads’ band play for my dad’s birthday and it was just the BEST!!! Those memories we still talk about. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. And all of the members of the O family are good people. I am grateful to know such nice people.
