Monday, July 18th, 2016

Grace Loraine Riggles Johnson, age 93, passed away on Monday, July 18, 2016, at Life Care Center in Sedro-Woolley Washington.

Grace was born on April 8, 1923 in Bellingham, Washington, to Magnus and Borghild Asplund. She graduated from Bellingham High School in 1941 and Skagit Valley College in 1961.

Grace and Ralph E. Riggles were married in 1941. Mr. Riggles passed away in 1952. In 1955 she married Albert L. Johnson.

In her more active days, Grace enjoyed making friends and memories through years of league bowling, Mariner’s baseball, Pinochle and BINGO. She very much enjoyed family gatherings and watching her grandchildren in sport, music and other life events. She worked as an LPN at Skagit Valley Hospital and United General Hospital, at Cascade Frozen Foods and for Skagit County Senior Services. She volunteered for many years at the Sedro-Woolley Senior Center.

Grace was also very proud of her Norwegian ancestry, over the years enjoying many Sons of Norway activities.

Grace is survived by her sons, Raymond Riggles, of Sedro-Woolley; Randy Riggles, of Concrete; daughters, Janis (Ray) Selvig, of Sedro-Woolley; Joni (Stephen) Lee, of Burlington; daughter-in-law, Linda Johnson, of Arco, Idaho; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Eileen Norma; brother, Richard; husbands, Ralph Riggles and Albert Johnson; daughter-in-law, Betty Riggles; stepson, George Johnson; stepdaughter and spouse, Glee and Swede Daves.

Special thanks to the staff at Life Care Center and Northwest Hospice Services for their attentive, loving care of mom.

My family would like to send sincere condolences to the Johnson family for the loss of you dear loved one. May you find comfort and hope from the bible promise at Isaiah 25:8. Pray constantly, avoid isolation, and lean on God as you cope during this most difficult time.

I have so many great memories of my grandma Grace. We watched a lot of Murder She Wrote, played tons of Yatzee and I doubt she missed a Mariners game. She had a great sense of humor and always seemed to smile. She taught me how to make the perfect bologna sandwich (always butter the bread first), and let us eat cereal for desert. She was a wonderful, loving lady with a huge heart. I love you grandma.

I met Grace through her daughter, Jan, when we were students at Cascade Jr. High. I really got to know her in the last 23 years when we would run into each other visiting Jan at the Life Care Center. Grace was such a joy to be around because she always looked for the bright side in every situation. Her family wrote in her obituary of some of her activities she loved. She practiced the art of doing your best whatever the task. She always put on her happy face and was fun to be around. She so loved her family and was loved and supported in return. She is probably partnered with St. Peter in a game of pinocle right now.
We love you, Grace. Mary Sue
