James ‘Art’ Cook a longtime resident of Lyman went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 while hunting with his son near Winthrop, WA at the age of 73 years. He was born May 21, 1930 in Caney Fork, North Carolina the son of Paul and Gennie Morgan Cook. Art has been a Skagit County resident since 1941. He was a US Army Veteran serving from 1948 to 1952 in the Korean War as a Heavy Equipment Engineer. On June 13, 1953 he was married to Mabel Ann Campbell at the Hamilton Baptist Church and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June of this year. Art worked as a diesel mechanic for many years for NC Machinery in Mount Vernon and Alaska, retiring in 1990. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his boys and traveling with Mabel and his girls. Art especially enjoyed fishing with family and friends at Ross Lake and in November of last year he was able to accomplish his life long dream of fishing for brown trout in New Zealand. He was an active member of the Lyman Baptist Church; steadfast and dependable who was always there to help people in need. Art is survived by his wife Mabel Ann Cook of the family home in Lyman. 2 sons Frank and his wife Patty Cook of Lyman and Jim and his wife Terri Cook of Sedro-Woolley. 2 daughters Sherry and her husband Jay Black of Sedro-Woolley and Alesia and her husband Ron Van Pelt of Burlington. 7 grandchildren Jerrie Lee Davidson, Frank Cook Jr, Kristi Lloyd, Shiloh Sparks, Jordan Cook, Melody Van Pelt, and Dylan Van Pelt. 3 great grandchildren Jacob Davidson and Kody and Carter Sparks. A brother Lyle Cook of Sedro-Woolley and 2 sisters Mag and her husband Don Hughley and Marie and her husband N.T. Presnell all of Stanwood. Numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Jeff in July of 2000, and 4 brothers Floyd, Baxter, Herman, and Blaine.
Funeral Services will be Monday, November 17, 2003 at 1:00PM at the Lyman Baptist Church with Pastor Ron Schenk officiating. Interment will follow at the Lyman Cemetery with Military Honors provided by George Baldridge Post #31 American Legion.
