James Filbert Pizzuto, age 86, a longtime resident of Sedro-Woolley, passed away on October 6, 2010, at United General Hospital.

He was born on April 15, 1924, to Joseph and Jenny (Giovanina Martino) Pizzuto, on Duke’s Hill at the family homestead.  He was raised and attended schools in Sedro-Woolley, the class of 1943.  He immediately enlisted into the Navy, serving on destroyer escort, USS Manning as a Corpsman in the South Pacific during WWII.

Jim married Malla J. Van Wingerden on August 15, 1948 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  He joined the Army in May of 1948, serving in The Philippines, Japan, Germany and at Stateside Posts.  He was an Army Recruiter in Seattle, and an Associate Professor of Military Science at University of California at San Francisco, retiring in 1965.

Jim was an insurance agent, and owner of the Cascade Agency in Sedro-Woolley, handling fire, auto, casualty and life insurance services.

Jim was active in local politics, and in the American Legion Post #43, serving as a Post Commander and as a Commander of the 2nd District, and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council #8672.  He was a winemaker, like his father, and raised tomatoes.

Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years, Malla; son, Mark; nephew, Mike Pizzuto, of Mount Vernon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Peter, Tony and Michael, and his two sisters, Frances and Angeline.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, October 15, 2010, at the Union Cemetery, Sedro-Woolley.  A time of visitation will be available from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Wednesday and Thursday at Lemley Chapel.
