James “Jim” Mathis

Saturday, May 20th, 2023

“Big Jim,” a lifelong resident of Skagit Valley passed away on May 20, 2023, at his home in Birdsview after a short battle with cancer. Jim was born in Sedro-Woolley on April 1, 1963, the son of James and Georgia (Schryer) Mathis. Jim attended school in Sedro-Woolley, graduating with the class of 1982, lettering in football and wrestling. Shortly after high school, Jim attended Bellingham Technical School, where he completed requirements to obtain his electrical license through the State of Washington.

The past ten years, Jim was employed by Seattle Public Schools as an electrician and foreman. Jim was a proud member of IBEW Local Union #46. Jim always referred to his coworkers as his “work family.”

Jim’s real passion was the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting, golfing, and fishing with his group of amazing friends. He also enjoyed darts, earning him and his teammates many first-place trophies.

Jim is survived by his siblings, Sonya (Mathis) Zyskowski, her husband, Mike, and their son Zachery (whom Jim was extremely proud of); Vanessa (Mathis) Blair, and her husband Scott; aunts, Barb Medford, Veryle Hitt,  Sue Mathis-Littlefield;  uncle, Gene Mathis.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Georgia Mathis; grandparents, Frank and Bessie Mathis, and Robert and Veda Schryer; additional relatives, Bill Schryer, Roy and Phyllis Queen, Don Hitt, Gary Medford, Glen and Gerry Adams, Blanch Kloes, Carolyn Bastion, Carolyn Scott, Donna Medford, Wayne Queen, Mike Adams, Mike Buchanan, and Christopher Buchanan.

Jim, Sonya, and Vanessa would like to express their deepest gratitude to Hospice of the Northwest. In lieu of flowers, Jim’s wish was to have any memorial tributes be made to Hospice of the Northwest, Mount Vernon, Washington.

Jim’s celebration of life will be held at 1:00, on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at the Eagle Haven Winery, 8233 Sims Road, Sedro-Woolley. Buffet lunch will be provided.  Share your memories of Jim and sign the online guest register.

We love you and will miss you so very much, Jimmy.
