Janet Joyce Barrie Mahaffie, 102, was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James H. Barrie. She was born in Walla Walla, Washington on February 18, 1916. She left on her final journey April 26, 2018.

She attended Central Washington College where she received her teaching certificate. She later received her B. A. degree from Western Washington University. She enjoyed many years of elementary teaching in Sedro-Woolley, and then retired to follow her dreams to travel both in the United States and abroad. Her suitcase was always packed and ready to go. Jan was a snowbird that loved the sun. She lived in Arizona for many years.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Margo Potampa; brother, John Barrie; sisters, Peg Hogue and Bee Chamberlain.

She is survived by her son, Michael Mahaffie and his wife Esther; grandson, Matthew Mahaffie (Lara); great-grandchildren, Annalise, Beckett, Ettalyn, Emelia, and Emmett; along with step-great-grandchildren, Elleece and Ethen; son-in-law, Harley Potampa; sister-in-law, Karen Nichols; “acquired daughters”, Reta Stephenson and Freddi Bolinger; many very close friends among them were two long-time friends , Jessie Miller and Joan Bricka; Jan had several nieces and nephew, all were so special to her and she loved dearly.

Jan made an impact on whom she touched and will definitely be missed by all

    My first grade teacher in 1960 at Mary Purcell. She rapped my hands with a ruler once. I deserved it. Taught me a lesson.
    I liked her, and with her as my welcome to schooling, I figured school was gonna be all right.
