JoAnne Self

Saturday, January 8th, 2022

JoAnne Self, age 81, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022, at home with her husband holding her hand in Sedro-Woolley, Washington.  She was born November 17, 1940, in Sedro-Woolley to Alex and Ethel Mae (Ammons) Henry.

She moved to LaConner in 1970 and started working for the school district doing various jobs including Cook, Bus Driver, Librarian, and Softball Coach.  Her commitment to the school and more importantly the students, prompted the district to establish an award in her name honoring the student who best contributed to the school in a selfless fashion.

Joanne enjoyed reading, camping, fishing, traveling, and was very passionate about playing and coaching softball. The girls and young women she coached were like family to her. She was a fierce competitor and also the sweetest and kindest person you could ever know.

JoAnne is survived by her husband, Richard Self; sons, James and his wife, Kimberly Self and Joseph and his wife, Lyn Self; grandchildren, Ryan, April, Tyler, Jason, Brandon; sister, Hazel Henry.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Fred Henry, Phyllis Sackman and Betty Biddix.

Special thanks to her caregivers and to Hospice of the Northwest.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of the Northwest.  Her final resting place is the Lyman Cemetery.  Share your memories of JoAnne and sign the online guest register.

    Dear JoAnne,
We laughed til we cried when we took turns riding in a laundry cart. Robin was probably giggling the most. We always got the best of the men. Bob was no competition when you teased him. He loved you and your fun spirit. I remember the surprise train trip that Jim and Kimberly gifted all of us with. We laughed to Canada and back again. Hopefully you will find a big plastic rat to send down to Dick. He’ll know that black rat is from me and you! We had enough fun on our travels to last forever! I know Bob was at Heavens’s gate waiting to give you the hug that you and he always shared. My love, Cathy

Condolences to Arlis and family for the loss of Joanne. We were friends from elementary school until she left in high school. Our classmates often mentioned her at our luncheons and reunions. We will have our memories of her.
