Kathryn Bernice Roberts

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

Kathryn Bernice Roberts, 53, passed away at the family home in Day Creek on Tuesday, May 24, 2005.
Kathy was born the daughter of Floyd and Bertha Smith on April 18, 1952, at the Miners Hospital in Nevada City, CA. Her father died shortly before she was born and her mother married Ira Davy, whom she came to love as her dad. She was raised and attended school in Grass Valley, CA and she was a member of the class of 1970. She married Thom Haley with whom she had a son, Zachary. They later divorced and Kathy moved to Washington with her son, Zachary. She soon met Bill Roberts with whom she would share the rest of her life. Kathy and Bill were married Nov. 5, 1976 in Mount Vernon. They had good times and bad times, but their love always carried them through it all. On Oct. 5, 1985, their son, Matthew was born and he was as the name is supposed to mean, ‘a gift from God’; he had a great influence on the way they decided to live their lives.
They lived in Mount Vernon until 1992, at which time they bought Grandpa Frank Maddox’s old house in Day Creek. They remodeled it a couple of times, but Kathy made sure that the house kept the look of ‘Grandpa’s house’. She was an excellent swimmer and was thrilled when we were able to buy the land next to us that included a creek and swimming hole; she, Matt and our dog Cody spent many a hot summer day there. She cleared land, fenced, and built shelter for the many pets she had and loved. Kathy had a way with animals that is seldom seen; she raised a wild Canadian goose from infancy and it followed her around like a dog until it flew off and joined the flock one sad fall day. The animals seemed to compete with one another for Kathy’s attentions.
Kathy worked in the retail industry for many years and was a pharmacy tech for Rite-Aid before she decided to retire and work at home. She made many friends through her years in retail with co-workers and customers alike. She was a very giving person and would sometimes frustrate her husband, Bill by giving away all of her purchases to people she stopped to see on her way home. She was an excellent cook, seamstress, gardener, and had a great love of all of nature. To receive a pair of slippers that she had crocheted was a treat to all who received them. Perhaps her greatest gift of all though, was that of being a mother; many of her children’s friends considered her their second mother and to be there when she was pulling a batch of cookies out of the oven was the best.
Words can not convey the sorrow that her family feels, she was the best wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend that there will ever by. We can carry with us the joy of loving her forever and have some comfort in the fact that she will no longer have to suffer the pain of fighting the battle with cancer.
Kathy is survived by her husband, Bill and son, Matt at the family home, daughter, Sally Hallmark of Big Lake, mother, Bertha Davy of Grass Valley, Ca, brother, Mel Smith of Colfax, CA, grandchildren, Jamie and Michael, mother-in-law, Gwen Roberts, sister-in-law, Linda Seivert, special nephew Dino Rua and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by son, Zachary Haley, sister Cookie Rua, brother, Leland Smith, father, Frank Smith, and step-father, Ira Davy.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2005 at 1:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints in Sedro-Woolley with Bishop Melvin Call officiating. The family suggests memorials to the Skagit Valley Humane Society, Burlington, WA.
