Marie Hodgin

Thursday, April 27th, 2023

Marie Mabel Hodgin passed away on April 27, 2023 at Creekside Continuing Care Community in Burlington, WA.  Marie was born August 9, 1930 to Carrol Edwin Lanktree and Ethel Marie Richardson Lanktree.  She was raised in Seattle and enjoyed her summer visits to her grandparents in Sedro-Woolley. In 1948 she graduated from Langley High School and began dating Martin Hodgin whom she married in 1950.  They purchased a small unpainted one-bedroom house in Hamilton, WA.  Together they worked to turn it into a lovely three-bedroom rambler, owning and living there for 73 years.  They had three sons, dozens of horses, and hundreds of cattle.  They enjoyed each other, social gatherings at their home, their many friends, horse trips into the mountains, summer road trips throughout the western US and most of all their family.

Marie worked for the SWSD as a secretary at Hamilton Grade School, beginning in 1964 and when it closed at Mary Purcell and Central in SW until she retired in 1995.  She was the Town of Hamilton city clerk and treasurer for many years.  Many locals will remember working under her watchful eye in the family berry fields.  She drove tractors, rode horses, worked cattle, took and developed photographs, baked from scratch, worked in the garden, did the home maintenance, loved flowers, was a crackerjack grandma and looked good in both jeans and dresses.

She is survived by her sons and their wives, Chuck and Millie (Wiggins-Cabe) of Sedro Woolley, Mike and Janet (Bettinger) of Bellingham, David and Colleen (Driggs) of Winthrop; granddaughters, Valerie Martin of San Antonio TX, Anna Kominak (Glen) of Winthrop, Amy Crandall (Chad) of Davenport WA, Emily Forbes (Ryan) of Newberg OR and Libby Hodgin (Matt Heikkila) Aurora CO.  Her great grandchildren, Ryan and Josh Aalpoel, Syann and Clancy Mitchell, Adria and River Crandall, David and Grace Kominak and Summer and Aidan Forbes.  Add to that four great-great grandchildren and her love goes on.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin in 2011; her brother, Mike Lanktree in 2014; sister-in-law, June Anderson in 2010; many dear friends.

She will be missed by many.  She never liked being elderly and now she is forever young.

Memorial service will be held at 1:00, on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at the Central United Methodist Church, 1013 Polte Rd Sedro-Woolley WA 98284, with Rev Drew Frisbie presiding. Share your memories of Marie and sign the online guest register.

Absolutely one of kindness and most thoughtful people that I’ve ever meant. She always had a warm smile and a kind word. The world has lost another great woman. Thoughts and best wishes for all the family…..

What a great run Marie had. And a such a fun person to be around. It was an honor to have Marie guest at our Thanksgiving table more times than we can remember. Always the life of the party, they will not be the same, in future but her fun and joyful spirit will be present. May her memory be a blessing.
