Patricia Walden

Patricia Walden

Thursday, July 24th, 2014

Patricia “Pat” Lee Walden (Ray), 58, of Sedro-Woolley, WA, died suddenly on Thursday, July 24, 2014 in Mount Vernon, WA.

Pat was the first of three children born to Lee Ray and Shirley Menne.  She was born on August 28, 1955 in Redding, CA.

Pat grew up in the Concrete and Newhalem area of Washington State and graduated from Concrete High School in 1973.

In 1978, Pat married Douglas Lawrenson of Burlington, WA.  During their marriage they had three children.  At the time of their marriage, Pat worked as a waitress at the Gateway Restaurant in Sedro-Woolley.

In 1986, Pat and her family moved to Hobart Bay, AK.  While living there, Pat worked for Pacific Wing and Channel Aviation as ground control for small floatplanes delivering people and supplies to the small logging community.

In 1989, Pat and her children moved to Petersburg, AK where she worked as an Aviation Dispatcher for the United States Forest Service.  Pat excelled in her role as an Aviation Dispatcher managing resources and dispatching aid to many remote locations in Southeast Alaska.  Pat received national recognition for her work in the Tongass National Forest and was honored with a Presidential Citation, presented to her in Washington, D.C.

In 1999, Pat married her current husband, James “Jim” Walden of Petersburg, AK.  Upon his retirement from the Petersburg School District, Jim and Pat maintained a home in Petersburg, but spent most of their time abroad, exploring the country in their motorhome.

During her life, Pat had an unrivaled passion for the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest and found peace and serenity in the unspoiled beauty of nature.  Pat could spend hours contentedly strolling an uninhabited beach, scouring kelp beds for hidden treasures and marveling at the beauty of a humpback whale breaching in the distance.

Pat also had a love of animals and her dream was to have a small hobby farm on the upper Skagit River, where she could spend time with children and care for animals.

Pat is survived by her husband, Jim Walden; her children and their spouses, Brandon & Amy Lawrenson, Cory & Jennifer Lawrenson and Natalie & Gale Ensley.  Her grandchildren, Aidan Lawrenson, Logan Ensley, Conor Lawrenson, Landon Crabtree and Lillian Lawrenson.  Her parents, Lee Ray and Shirley Menne; her sister, Pamela Strait; her brother, Bryan Ray and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends whose lives she touched during her time here as well as her good friends, Fanshaw and Whitney, who accompanied her on so many adventures.

Pat was preceded in death by her beloved grandparents Gus and Doris Menne.

In accordance with her wishes, a private viewing was held for family on Monday, July 28th with no formal service.  Pat was cremated and her remains will be scattered in the places that were special to her.  In lieu of flowers, online donations can be made to American Humane Association in the name of Patricia Walden.

Dear Jim, Cory, Brandon & Natalie,
Some how we missed the news about your mom passing in July. I think it was when we were out visiting Pt. Baker and Forest Service cabins. Jim and I both knew Pat from working at the Forest Service. Then I got to know you all even better when working at school here in Petersburg. Pat was such a down to earth, easy to talk to person. Your mom was very proud of all of you kids. Jim, I am sorry she cannot be with you to enjoy your retirement days. She is gone much too soon. Please know our thoughts are with you all.

  • Joanne "Smart" Overly

To Pattie’s family and friends I send my condolences. We started our friendship when she visited Newhalem in grade school and traveled together as “babysitter’s” in college ( I think it was a way to go to summer school) and have some fun. Pattie always brought the life to any event and was loved by all. My best to you all. Joanne

  • Julianne Thompson

Rest in peace, Pat. You will be greatly missed.
She was a lovely person, so proud of her children & grandchildren. I will always treasure the memory of her thoughtful actions and support in the wake of a terribly tragic loss of a mutual friend. Pat was a hard worker, always with an eye for making life better with her beautiful flower gardens & fabulous cinnamon rolls. I took great comfort in knowing that she was watching over me and would get me out of the woods safely. And I admired her ability to take somebody straight to the woodshed with a simple pause over the radio.

Jim, Brandon & Family, Cory & Family, Natalie & Family – Our hearts are heavy as we mourn your loss of Pat – she will always be a feisty gal in our memories. The earth is a bit dimmer without her light – but the stars are more brilliant with her spirit. Keep her in your hearts and share with your beautiful children the stories of their feisty gran! I know how proud Pat was of each of you kids and how very much she loved her grand babies… May the good Lord help to strengthen you and bind your families with love.
We are thinking of you. Bruce & Wendy, Ty, Lindsay and family, Krystlyn & Sean

In loving memory of a beautiful soul. She touched the lives of many but has a very special place in my heart. She and my brother brought us three beautiful children to love and cherish. She loved them fiercely and was passionate about all things in their lives. A loving and beautiful guardian angel will be watching over her loved ones. Peace and calm surround her now along with all our love!
