Phyllis Queen

Thursday, March 17th, 2022

Phyllis L. Queen, 82, of Sedro-Woolley, WA, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, March 17th, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Phyllis was born on March 24th, 1939, to Melvin and Louise (Bryant) Johnson, in Sedro-Woolley, WA, where she grew up with her three siblings, playing in the fields of their grandparent’s farm along the Skagit River.

On December 12th, 1957, Phyllis married her husband of 57 years, Ernest (Ernie) Queen, and went on to raise their three children, on the same farm that Phyllis grew up on.

Phyllis enjoyed spending her days painting ceramics, creating elegant floral arrangements, and for many years, she attended holiday bazaars to share her creations with the community.

Her favorite place to be was home on the farm, surrounded by her family. She enjoyed cooking, and hosting every holiday or family get-together. You could always count on the smell of homemade biscuits to great you as you walked through the door; and a handful of grandchildren (and great-grandchildren, too)! It was her pride and joy to share that the school bus stopped in front of her house for over four decades.

Phyllis was known for her tales of life growing up on the farm. She would beam ear to ear sharing stories of fishing off the bank for Sunday dinners with her grandmother, and climbing the tallest trees with her brothers and sister.

In the spring and summer, there were two other places you could find Phyllis; in the garden with an apron full of beans, or on the road with her husband Ernest and his band, Queen’s Bluegrass, traveling to bluegrass festivals across the Pacific Northwest.

As the matriarch of our family, she helped raise each one of us, and guide us in our relationship with the Lord. Her faith was strong and everlasting. It was her faith in Christ that surrounded her in peace and comfort throughout the last seven years leading our family on her own, since the passing of her husband, and her subsequent battle with cancer. Through it all, she remained strong in her fight for health, as well as keeping a positive and faithful heart.

Phyllis is survived by her sister, Ellie & Dennis Bolen; children, Dale & Grace Queen and Loretta Edson; grandchildren, James & Ashley McMullen, Brittany Queen, Ashlee Edson, Susan Queen, Sherilyn Queen, Gwen & Brian Lee; great-grandchildren, Hayden, Delilah, Riley, Malachi, Mary Jo, Jeremiah, Paizlee and Yenna; numerous extended family members, as well as her beloved lap dogs, Daisy and Brindy, who never left her side.

She is preceded by her husband, Ernest Queen; daughter, Lonna (Queen) McMullen; grandson, Travis McMullen; parents, Melvin & Louise (Bryant) Johnson; twin brothers, Walter & Winston “Wink” Johnson; grandparents, Albert & Mabel Johnson.

Phyllis will be laid to rest beside her husband Ernest at Union Cemetery, Sedro-Woolley in a private family service. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The NOAH Center of Stanwood.  Please share your memories of Phyllis and sign the online guest register.

I have fond memories of my mother and I, and her friend Nina Corn going to visit Phyllis and her family on the farm, I remember them vividly having big dogs that would greet us as we pulled in, ( farm dogs I am sure) and I was terrified of dogs, but other than that we always had a great visit. My thoughts and prayers will be with the family. I am the youngest child of Juanita and L.G Queen.
