Richard “Dick” Charles Mailliard

Sunday, July 22nd, 2012

Richard “Dick” Charles Mailliard, age 79, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2012 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Meadville, PA, on February 27, 1933 to Albert E. and Margaret S. (McHenry) Mailliard.

Dick spent the earlier years of his life in Guys Mills, PA, where he enjoyed playing sports, hunting and laughing at the dinner table with his large Catholic family. Shortly after graduating from Randolph High School in 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Dick was stationed at Paine Field in Washington State, where he met the love of his life Darlene. From 1952-1955, he was stationed at Landstuhl Air Based in Germany, where he was a statistician for the 86th Fighter Bomber Wing.

After serving his county, Dick returned to Washington State and was united in marriage to Darlene Snoozy on June 11, 1955.
Dick, with Darlene by his side, lived his life-long dream of being a farmer. In their early years of marriage, they operated dairy farms in Snohomish County. Then in 1965, they moved their growing family to Skagit Valley, buying a farm on Cockreham Island. Dick dairy farmed with his family until 1987 and continued farming, making hay and raising beef cattle until the time of his death.

Those who knew Dick will recall his love of baseball, especially the Mariners, playing cards, golfing and bowling. Many friends and family will carry fond memories of time spent with him at the farm and his holiday picnics.

Dick is survived by his wife of 57 years Darlene; children Cynthia (Russell) Mailliard-Farstead, Linda (Cork) Hunger, Michael (Toni) Mailliard, Susan (Bill) Esary and Steven Mailliard; grandchildren Misty (Cory) Nahoopii, Brant Hunger, Robert (Kate) Walsh, Kayla, Nolan and Shane Mailliard, Dakota and Bryce Esary, Colton Mailliard and Alyssa Kilpatrick; sister Marjorie Sipos and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert, Lawrence, Kenneth, Paul and Eugene Mailliard and sister, Dorothy Mesley.
A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Jerry Mesley, Dick’s nephew, on Saturday, August 4th at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 719 Ferry Street, Sedro-Woolley. The mass will be followed by military honors and a memorial reception in the church hall. Linda… I just saw this and can remember your dad so well. I used to love going home with you after school and playing on the farm. I have been gone since 1970, but I always drive by the farm when I visit the area. I am sending love and prayers from North Carolina where I live now. Cherish memories and don’t forget to make new ones. Bless you and your family.

Aunt Darlene and Family…. We have such wonderful memories of the times your family traveled back to Pennsylvania for the family reunions. We can’t ever remember a time when Uncle Dick did not have a smile on his face – so full of life and laughter. We are confident God’s grace will sustain you through the difficult days ahead. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Aunt Darlene and Family,

We do not have the words to express our deepest synpathy. As I said in our last phone conversation, Mom is watching out for Uncle Dick. I know that she is with him, as are all of his brothers.

We pray for him every day

  • Jeff and Cora (Mailliard) Armitage

Aaah, Uncle Dick. Just saying his name makes me smile. Although I was only 6 years old when Uncle Dick left PA, I remember laughter all around during his return visits. He was full of life and liked to have fun.
….and I thought he married the prettiest girl on earth. We were very fortunate that Uncle Dick and Aunt Darlene were in PA last year for a visit.

Our condolences go out to Darlene and family.
